  • KDJ-120R - 6SP transmission

    Hi guys,

I am currently doing a fluid change on my D4D Prado. It has the 6SP manual RA61F.

I purchased a service manual to try figure it all out for myself.

I cant seem to find the refill point. Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

Also, my next change will be the front Diff. I was able to loosen off the filler bolt, but the 10mm allen key on the drain i cant seem to undo. I have a 10mm attachment onto a breaker bar, but no luck. Maybe i just need some more elbow grease. Did anyone need to use a pneumatic impact driver?

    Thanks

    Nate

I have noticed a bolt on the side and top. The top bolt however looks damn near impossible to get too.

Is there a method of changing the transmission fluid? I know with automatics you need to run the car for a few moments to pump out fluid within the system.

Last time I did A 6 speed oil change I don't remember there being any difficulty.
It should be there on the side.
There no other shortcut way of doing it.

The diff plugs can be very tight, just make sure you use a quality 1/2 drive & make sure it's all the way in.
I have had them come in rounded off & had to use other means to get it out & end up replacing them.
Get the top one out first before you drop it out, as the top one can be the hard one.

Sorted out the transmission. Shifts like a dream now.

But still no luck with the diff.

The top one came undone very easy. The lower one is still giving me a hard time. I hate the 10mm allen key. Not really sure why they chose that over a standard bolt used everywhere else. I am starting to think i will replace this when i eventually remove it. Save any issues in future, and i may have to seek other methods of removal.

Ive tried a battery operated impact driver now. 700nm didn't help. Only using Sidchrome / Kinchrome sockets. Not getting any love.
Tomorrow i will get some ramps. see if i cant get more room then give it another go.

Ditto on joining the 'rounding' club. Just rounded the filler plug on my tranny today. New plugs all round will be on the agenda when Toyota opens Monday. Bolts seem very soft but a good reason to undo the filler before the drain.

          Cheers,

            Nate,
Give everything a good hit with CRC or similar. If you still have no luck clean the area up and get yourself a little gas torch (the tiny ones that are the size of your hand) heat the center of the bolt and then try the cheater bar method again. Just use a bit of caution on how hot you go and what your surrounds are in regards to anything that can catch fire.

              Hi Dueler,

The nut ended up getting damaged by the rattle gun. Not completely, but enough to make it impossible to get the torque required.

I ended up drilling into the plug with a 7mm hole. Stopping when it hit the magnet on the rear. I then used the easyout tool screw extractor with some Trefolex cutting compound. It was very tight, but that method worked a treat.
Obviously replaced the plug and washer. Hope next time isnt so much of an effort, but i feel like it maybe. Atleast i know what to expect.
