Auto Transmission "clunk"

Hi all, new to the forum trying to find others experiencing a similar issue with 120 series transmission.

I have a 2009 120 Series VX Prado and up until recently it has been flawless. In recent months I have started to notice a bit of a gremlin in the transmission. The problem occurs after the vehicle has come to a stop, when removing foot from brake pedal to accelerate there is a rather noticeable "clunk" as the transmission engages. Sometimes it is there and other times it isn't? Everything else seems fine except for gear changes perhaps hanging on a little long at the top end prior to overdrive but this may just be a weight issue as the vehicle is quite heavily loaded up at the moment.

My regular mechanic didn't seem to know what was causing the problem as nothing was being logged on the telemetry and simply suggested I take it Toyota to look at. Did that and the best they could come up with was a dirty air cleaner (yep $200 down the drain) Could have told them that!

So yeah, wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of similar.

Sounds like the typical 120 tailshaft clunk.

I did consider tailshaft but it just seemed so localised to the area right under the transmission.

When you say "typical" I'm assuming this is a known problem? If so what is the remedy?

The "tailshaft clunk" issue usually occurs when the vehicle comes to a stop. This appears to be the opposite problem.

The remedy for the tailshaft clunk is a regrease of the tailshaft spline or a replacement to a diamond coated version. Are your driveshafts dry as a bone?

After a quick look it does appear the shafts are a bit dry but there certainly doesn't seem to be any play as such. I suppose the simplest way of knowing for sure is to give them a grease up anyway yeah? Any particular type of grease that you would recommend?

I seem to have this exact same noise coming from the petrol 2005 grande sitting outside.
I've checked tail shaft and front shaft. Unis and spline but doesn't seem to be this.
Do me a favour stormy put brakes on and go from drive to reverse...a few times. See if it does it. Mine seems to be transfer related? When you get underneath car with someone doing this it seems like it's struggling to find drive at the front diff. It like shutters and goes clunk.
