Slightly OT, Pete, but just out of interest, did you do the course run by Len's mob at ARB Newcastle?
If so, was it the 2 day course (bush and beach)?
Sort of, it was run by Out Of Town 4WD (OOT4WD) at Barnsley. ARB & OOT4WD are one and the same now I believe.
Started 8am @ OOT4WD with some theory then mid morning out to a course for some bush work and a water crossing (the course it was actually about 10 minutes away from my home).
Next day to Stockton Bight.
My wife and I came away very happy not having a lot of 4WD experience before. Certainly would never have tackled the things we did before the course.

One of the things about the new 5 speed auto is that it does not have a fluid level dip stick, so it's not possible to determine how much fluid is in the gearbox. Also it does not use the commonly available fluids like Dexron III but Toyota's special fluid. You can't put Dexron III into the 5 speed gearbox as it wrecks it.
I'm wondering, but I don't know the answer - is the 4 speed gearbox equipped with a dipstick? And secondly, what fluid does it use? Does anyone know the answer to these two questions?
The reason why I ask is because it's easier to fix in the bush if it:
a. Uses Dexron III
b. Has a dipstick to make filling up easier
its a sealed unit. U dont need to replace the auto transmission fluid as far as i know anyway.
that said.. u could use whatever you can get for a bush fix, the auto will probably go into limp home mode anyway to limit the damage due to wrong fluid.

The 4speed DOES have a dipstick.
It requires "Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-IV"
It appaently doesn't require servicing or fluid changes unless used under severe conditions. (Whatever that means...)
I have had manual gearboxes for the last 36 years I now have a 5 speed auto and I can say I will never go back to a manual. The 5 speed makes on road and off road so easy in sand in the mud I tow 2 ton caravan with easy (13.5l per 100) why should I change gear. The only draw back I see is off road, with break downs if you get stuck in park as the electronics for Auto can lock you in gear or park or with a flat battery you can't push start.
If you get locked in gear, you can use the "Shift Lock" to change gears (in the Prado). As for flat batteries, get a dual battery setup and problem solved.

Shift lock switch is the problem if it fails your locked
