I am yet to hear of one breaking down in the bush, 4 or 5 speed?
Has yours given you issues when outback Lawrence?
I was travelling with a Prado V6 with the new 5 speed auto. It ingested water and the shifts became very rough and the transmission started to flare very badly.
Dumped the fluid and it was all burnt.
Refilled with Dextron III and it didn't do the transmission any good....
Had to have it towed back for repairs. Trip ended early.
Fortunately it wasn't in the Outback but still very far away from home.
Recently I picked up the new (work) Prado GX 5 sp auto diesel, and generally happy with it - rather coming to terms with it compared to my own older 4wd.
Not sure if its just me but I find 80 km @ 1500 rpm is a tad bit too low for crusing along.
At this speed I can feel a vibration in the vehicle and when I come to a slight incline it has tendancy to drop revs and then loose speed quite quickly, not fun when you have a fully loaded b-train behind you powering up to get up the same hill !
To compensate for this I have been experimenting using the cruise control which appears to be slightly better, it drops about 5-7 kms, unlocks torque convertor and drops down to 4th gathers a few revs and then accelerates up to the set cruise speed.
The other method is to hold the box in 4th which means the engine is running a bit more happier (perkier ?) at nearly 2000 rpm for the same speed.
My concern with this is to what speed/revs can I hold 4th until I must change to D position ?
Anthing higher 90-100 is ok @ approx 2000 rpm
Any info suggestions appreciated

Hi all,
I'm looking to buy a Prado and my budget puts me right around the 2003 - 2004 price point, I would prefer a 5 speed auto to the 4 speed, I'm told this change occured during '04. My question is does anyone know which build month in '04 that Toyota changed to the 5 speed?
Thanks in advance
The changed at different times depending on weather it is diesel or petrol as i have an 05 diesel and it is the 4 speed box.
My only issue i have with the 4 speed it at 110kph i find it reving to high however now that i have the camper and tow at 95 to 100 it sits on 2000rpm right in the sweet spots and rarely changes gears on the hwy.
I do find however you have to get it over 85kph to get the torque converter to lock up. I notice when towing in areas that have an 80kph speed limit there is some gear hunting going on but once in the 90 zones and above all is good
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further
Hi, I had a december 2005 diesel and it had the 4 speed box, i belive the diesels changed to the 5 speed at the same time as the engine changed ie. D4D. dont know about the V6 though.
Cheers Andrew

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, but is it a trait of the 5 speed trans to drop back a gear on certain descents, (up to 3000rpm) when you initially apply the brake? Or is that to do with the brake system?
Our '03 4 speed didn't do it, but the '05 5 speed does, not sure whether it is braking system or transmission related, it gets a bit annoying though.
Sorry I'm new to this, apologies if I stuff things up.
I am looking at purchasing a 120 series and my price range kind of dictates that I will more than likely have to pick up the 4 speed. While that doesn't concern me too much I have heard great reviews about how much better the 5 speed is. I was thinking I could do a transmission swap as I can get hold of a 5 speed box. Has anyone done this and/or can anyone see any problems i.e changes to electrics, transfer case upgardes, diff ratios etc anything at all will be helpful.
I prefer the 4 speed over the 5 speed for towing. I felt that the 4 speed in my old 03 120 was a perfect match for towing and was much more responsive compared to my 09 120. I find the the 5 speed "dicks" about too much, holds low revs too long, and that you have to drive it like a manual for it to perform well. I think Toyota was too concerned about fuel economy over performance. If I could replace mine with a 4 speed, I would.

Cheers Bazza, interesting to hear your response in regards to towing. I would say that 80% of time I will not be towing anything as it will be my daily driver as well as my off road adventurer.
Realistically what is the fuel consumption differences between each?
