Re: 5 speed auto vs 4 speed auto

    Breno,
Buy the 4 speed , you will have no dramas with it. Yes, the 5 spped will be more economical, but in the scheme of things .. bugger all. Not being a smart arse, but IMHO if you need to worry about fuel consumption with any 4wd, your in the wrong game. Get the 4 speed, you'll be happy with it.

I find the the 5 speed "dicks" about too much, holds low revs too long, and that you have to drive it like a manual for it to perform well. I think Toyota was too concerned about fuel economy over performance. If I could replace mine with a 4 speed, I would.

Just to confuse you Breno, I have gone from a 2005 4 speed diesel to a 2009 5 speed diesel. I find that the 5 speed is far superior for towing, it is able to find a more suitable gear when in mountainous country and is much smoother in general. having said that the 4 speed wasn't terrible by any stretch. So 2 different replies with opposing views on the same topic, that should help you work out what to do eh! :?

hahaha cheers Andrew yeah nothing like a bit of opposing views to confuse the situation. I think in the end it will come down to a $ game for me in regards to which car I get. From all accounts both boxes are fine so I won't use that as such a determining factor when buying.

        Thanks guys

          breno

swore I'd never by an automatic 4wd (always had manuals at work). I bought a 2007 prado 5 speed auto and its great. Just completed a 4wd tag along tour in the Snowy mountains and no problems at all.

Also I got my prado through a vehicle wholesaler on the gold coast saved me quite abit of money (around 5k) if you want his details send me a pm

          cheers
