  • Clutch slip

Hi fellow Prado owners, this is my first time on and I have been reading a few stories about clutch problems with diesel 6 speeds, i wanted to share mine.
Last Wednesday 23/9/09 after my 30,000km service found heavy coat of oil around the power steering reservoir (not clutch related)and decided to take it back to Toyota to have it checked and as well asked them to check the clutch for problems as my wife and I felt it wasn't right, as i have enquired on previos services. The service dealer said yes it was starting to slip and needed to be removed and checked. 2 days work. Dropped off Thursday am, I rang them 5pm Thursday as i hadn't heard anything to find out what they had found and the story was that it needed to be replaced, be back Friday. Another service person rang and told me they couldn't get parts till Monday which was no good for me as my family were booked on the ferry Sunday morning for Moreton island for a weeks camping and plus the CLUTCH isn't covered under warranty. Unsure of price at this stage but the service people said they could stick the old clutch back in to keep me going for the week with my reply forget it.
Will find out tomorrow if completed and will pick up old parts to have a 2nd opinion.
Hope i don't have to put 3 clutches in her before the 3 year warranty runs out.

Never been on the beach, has towed a Alum boat, dirt road- no low range and mainly road work, long distance.
Anyway, if anyone can give me some feed back great or know of other people in same situation let me know.

    Cheers Butzy

    Re: Clutch slip

    Hey Butzy,

Doesn't sound right, my prados are doing mostly off road and heaps of sand driving, towing heavy trailers and are driven as work vehicles.

I auction the majority off at 80,000km, except for a couple of specialty ones and they are managing a clutch every 90-110,000kms.

Without starting WWIII with the missus, does she ride the clutch ??
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

      Re: Clutch slip

      Morning Spurio,

Thanks for your feed back. Your story sounds to what i would expect from a clutch as my 80 series ( that my wife drove 70% of time ) had its first clutch at 170,000km only because the rear engine seal leaked.

The wife just made me a coffee so i won't let her read reply.

Toyota opens soon and i"ll want to be the first caller to jog their memory.

      cheers butzy

            Re: Clutch slip

Hey Guys it has been a while since the problem with the clutch and wanted to have a catch up.
Yes i did pick up the car, $1700 out of pocket and feeling a much softer clutch to when it went in. spoke to the service Foreman from toyota and he told me the clutch either had to be in or out and next time look at a auto.
After i asked for my service reports from 10,0000km service had found i reported a noise from my throw-out bearing but it came back all OK. The Foreman was going to speak to the service manager about replacing a pin in the clutch, which they could do without removing the gearbox. 3 weeks later a pin come from Japan, fitted it and i received a cheque back for $1100.
My mechcanic mate has told me a bloke he knows with a nissan 6 speed did a clutch at 40,000km. Nissans warranty covered the lot. Since then I have had a contractor to my house in a 2008 D4D Hilux, tows a trailer and replaced a clutch at 14,000km and another at 24,000km under warranty with a lot of complaining.
Seeems to be when reversing up a hill and where possible use low range?????

Hope this helps. auto for me next !!!
