  • Optima D34M 5/16 post

Hi all, I have a single battery set up and just replaced the old wet cell battery with a optima blue top, does anyone know the max amp rating on the 5/16 posts.
I was thinking of connecting my warn M9000 winch to these post but not sure if they will take the load. I've read somewhere from another post that it's not advisable on a yellow top, but was thinking that the aux post on a blue top are closer to the main post they may have a higher rating. Can't find any info on the Internet.
    Thanks Rob

I've got an Optima D27M and have my Magnum 9K Winch running via the same size (5/16) posts and have had no issues to date.

Whilst people do it, Optima recommends not to. I have an email from them somewhere.

      Edit - here it is

Winches should always be connected to our SAE posts and not the threaded post. The threaded posts are intended for starting your vehicle which, although high current, is a short duration electrical load. A winch is also high current but can be very long duration. Using a winch connected to the threaded post could damage the connections in the battery, it can melt the side terminals right out of the battery housing. Only use the SAE (automotive type) terminals for connecting your winch.

Thanks for the heads up D4D. I have checked (touched) the terminals after winching and whilst they were a little warm, nothing alarming. Might swap them over just to be sure...

Yeah I'd say you'd need a pretty hard/long winching effort to do damage but best to err on the side of caution.
