Battery light stays on

Hi Guys,

I'm new to prados and have just bought a 2003 GRJ120 which I pick up on Sunday. It is in pretty good nick but it has one small issue which is perplexing me. The battery light is staying illuminated on the dash and has allegedly done so for years. It first occurred when they had tail light issues and had a mobile electrician fix them apparently. The car also has a dual battery system fitted and I wondered if it may be related to this?
According to the owner Toyota want to pull out the dash to diagnose this problem and say it could cost $1000, for what I wonder?

Any hints on where to start looking to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. :mrgreen:

Hi Matt- usually this would relate to an alternator issue. Not sure in you're case

Ok mate, i'll look there first. The owner reckons its been like that for ages, I guess the alternator could be charging but have some other issue.

Check the charge voltage, if it is ok then the alternators obviously ok.

If this is the case then the tell tail lamp circuit is quite simple, a wire runs from
the alternator voltage regulator to the led in the combination meter.

The led has battery behind, the most likely scenario is the wire has been grounded
somewhere or the other possibility is the regulator is faulty.

To eliminate a regulator fault, try pulling the plug out the alternator, the light shoud
extinguish if it's the regulator.
