  • New wiring to run fridge in cargo area

After some hassles with the existing fridge circuit, mainly faulty low voltage cutout/monitor it was time to replace the old with new.
Also added some extra Amp-hours by installing a Piranha 12" battery tray and a 105ah Supercharge allrounder this was then linked across via the rear of the engine bay to the 80ah allrounder that sits in an ARB battery cradle.

The positive cable runs through a manual reset circuit breaker (Black & Yellow) unit mounted on the fender.
This will also isolate the two auxillary batteries from one another when needed.

The Maxi fuse connected to the threaded positive post is the fridge circuit. The negative wire is also connected to the battery.
Cable used was Tycab Marine tinned copper wire 6mm flat twin sheathed 4.5mm squared nominal area, and 38 amp rating.
The other lighter red and black cables on the threaded posts are the comfort connections for the Ctek charger.

More manual reset Circuit breakers protect the rear Anderson plug used to connect to the camper trailer and Auxillary power outlets in the rear cargo area.

Found a flat, single skinned area of firewall just behind the brake booster, where a hole could be drilled to fit a rubber grommet. Non split conduit was used to protect the cable from the battery to through the fire wall. All of my other usual cabin grommets are at maximum capacity.
As seen from inside the cabin, above accelerator.
Behind the right foot kick panel, is home to a new Baintech battery guard. This unit is very compact and can be programed simply to various low voltage cutout levels to therefore protect batteries from excessive discharge.
The cable then continues under the plastic side trim to the cargo area.
Back here a new Narva- Engel socket was mounted. I am leaving the existing Merritt type socket in place for future use with lighting etc.
Fridge runs like a beauty, and volts hardly drop.
    Cheers
    Troy

      Very nice work mate.

Where did you source the non split conduit?

Brilliant - No Questions About it!!!

        Hey Foxclan,

That is absolutely a brilliant idea, great workmanship.

I wished there was as good auto elecies, that could do as good as job and three batteries - love it. The minister of finance is going to hate me when I start doing this.

Are you using a DC to DC battery charger and if so which one?

Do you have other pictures of your truck? Would love to see.

        Wombat 1.

Lucky for me I have a good auto electrical wholesaler close to work called Realport Traders.
They supply industry from Farmers to Mining.
The Non split conduit does cost more than normal split tube but is a better product.
          Cheers

            Thanks Wombat 1
Just running a Piranha DBE 180 voltage sensing isolator at this stage complemented by regular charging with the Ctek smart charger when mains power is available.
A couple of pictures here Wombat, enjoy.

Cheers Craig, need a couple more of those red booties and thinking about another circuit breaker to isolate Piranha DBE180 while charging from mains power.

Interesting that in the general thread today (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...153#post453153) where someone gives ARB Wangara a good plug after they re-wired his rear fridge set-up. They got rid of the earth wire from the rear socket to the negative battery and instead put a line direct to earth near to the socket. This was to fix the voltage drop that was causing the fridge not run cold enough.

It is interesting because we always follow the principle that if you use a sufficient gauge wire and do your joints properly then it is always better to connect it straight to the power source. This alleviates any chance of any previous workmanship in pre existing wiring causing you problems. Also ensures you have a good earth.

Sorry for slightly off-topic but I have run 6mm cable to a Andersen plug in the boot of my 95 series that then plugs into my DC-DC charger. Would I be better off just connecting the earth (negative) to the chassis or it shouldn't really matter as the charger will boost the voltage anyway? I realise there will be a slight voltage drop but is there enough to worry about reconnecting it to the chassis?

I prefer wiring all the way back to the battery.. It ensures a proper earth 100% of the time. As long as you have sufficient guage wire the fridges should be fine.

This is because the size of the wire (both neg and pos) wasn't big enough to handle the current. Connecting the neg directly to the chassis means the positive wire does not have to be as big. However I don't want stray currents running all over the vehicle unless you use specific earth points that Toyota have used.

It's all trial and error sometimes. If a fault comes up, good wiring standards will help in most situations to find the fault.
