  • Exterior 12v socket

Has anybody fitted a 12v cigarette socket externally on their rig? Where did you put it and do you have trouble with dust/water in it? I've found plenty that say they are waterproof but want to know how it really stands up to dust, after all I live in bull dust country! I was thinking maybe beside the trailer plug would be the best and easiest spot, what do you think?

I am about to do this on my 150.

I have a waterproof Anderson socket from ARB-Sidewinder which comes with a waterproof cover (the blister pack kit on their plugs and sockets page ) which I will mount next to the usual trailer plug on the tow bar.

It is wired into my second battery system which is always on. With a 50A capacity this will serve both for trailer power/charging and for accessories when the trailer is detached. Just need to make up a simple Anderson plug to whatever socket (cigarette, hella etc) adapter lead.

    Cheers

There was someone that fitted one into the hollow of the Toyota sovereign bar uprights some years ago, not sure I can remember who it was but if I remember I'll search out the post.

Anderson plugs are another option and lots of people have those on the rear of their vehicle for powering trailers. I have used my Anderson plug for powering accessories externally before, particularly a shower pump. An Anderson plug with an adaptor to a cigarette lighter plug would be easy to make if you didn't want to change all your plugs.

      Cheers Andrew

I bought my 120 with an Anderson plug for a trailer wired to the dual battery. We don't have a trailer, but as AJ120 said. Easy enough to make or buy an Anderson to Hella/Cigarette socket adaptor to use. Something I might use it on our next trip to get the fridge out of the back of the truck nearer the tent

Depending on what you are going to run, the other simple option is alligator clamps to socket adaptor? Clamp to the battery terminals, leads can come out under the bonnet to whatever you want. My dual battery has a second set of terminals I can use

I will run my LED awning lights this way once I get round to installing it

I had actually thought of just installing an Anderson plug but since I only need it for the shower and lights figured that the cigarette socket would keep it simpler - no need to worry about packing an adaptor.
The bullbar idea sounds interesting and I hadn't thought of that, not to sure that I'm be too confident about cutting holes into my bullbar though! I might have a look there though and see if there's somewhere to put a surface mount socket that would still be hidden and neat.
Thanks for the ideas and advice.

The plug was mounted through the plastic insert on the rear of the bulbar upright. Anyway remembered who it was, Samo so have a look here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ighlight=samos Picture in the first post and maybe some more info down the track.

            Cheers Andrew

Thanks for that link Andrew, I have the ARB bullbar so not sure that it has plastic there, I think it's all steel. It has given me an idea though, I don't use the drivers side antenna hole, I think I might try that spot for the socket. Hmmmmm, will have a look tomorrow and think about it.
