05 Prado starter motor spins but does not engage?

Starter motor is probably buggered, get it removed and reconditioned or replaced.

    Cheers Andrew

Don't know about the Prado, but a bit of lubrication (WD40) to the throw gear would fix the problem on other cars.

Ok, thanks for the tip, as a novice, how do I access it. I suspect the throw gear myself.

Thanks for the tip, but as I don't know much about it, i thought that as i can hear the starter spinning, the motor itself is Ok? Cheers

I had mine done when it started playing up, it was only $400 to replace, they used a reconditioned one and took mine to recondition for the next one.

Check the battery. A weak battery will cause the motor not to spin fast enough . That or the solenoid or cables are faulty. The other fault isolation bits are covered above.

have you removed the starter and checked it out? sounds like the anti reverse function of the clutch may have failed. Pull it off and power it up and see if the pinion engages, if it does, load it up with a piece of wood or the like and see if the pinion stops spinning, if it does the anti revese has failed and you will need to fix that or get a new starter.

                Cheers Joel

Another sympton is that it will start after moving the gearstick. Being an auto, i understand that it won't start unless in P or N, but if that switch is faulty, would it allow the starter to spin, but not throw the pinion? Really appreciate the replies so far, and any more to come. Cheers.

You would have to remove the starter motor and grease the outside gear so it freely moves on its axle.

So the throw gear is part number 28021

I would try a tap with a hammer first

                            Hello Barrys,

Pull the starter motor out and check that the solenoid contacts are all ok, my Landrover disco 2 had this exact trouble and I was quoted $800 for a new starter. I replaced the solenoid contacts for $23, dry lubricated the sliding gear pinion and the problem was fixed. Contacts last about 120000 km in a LR. This was only one of many problems I had with with the LR.

                            regards

                            Ross
