  • Winch wiring / Dual battery

    Hello all,

I have done a search but was unable to find what I was after.

I have a 12000lb Kingone winch on my Grande, haven't wired it as yet as I was debating installing dual batteries first and running the winch from that.

Would you advise dual batteries first or is the current single battery set up sufficient to power it?

Thanks in advance for your help,

    Cheers,
    Jeff

Always connect your winch to your cranking battery and winch with the vehicle on. A 2nd battery is good insurance in case you flatten your cranking battery.

Yes I would agree with D4D, hook it to the crank battery and use your second battery as a backup.

Also when winching take your time, 30 seconds of winching, 1 minute of resting in order that the winch doesn't over heat and the battery doesn't get too depleted, of course with the engine still running.

        Cheers Andrew

Why to your crank battery and not to your second battery as your crank battery is your most important 1 with the highest output?

It's the battery that typically is the biggest and will be charged by the alternator first

Wiring is all good, easy as pie, now the problem I have is (not that its fitted) is the control unit fowls on the bonnet.
I have a ARB deluxe bar. what to do?
              Any ideas would be great.

What bracket are you using? The ARB supplied bracket is a V shape to enable the control unit to clear the grille.

Your crank battery is always close to the winch, that is not always the case with the second battery, mine is in the rear.

Generally your crank battery is a more suitable type for the high draw of the which (which is much like a starter motor) some deep cycle batteries are not well suited to high amp draw.

Your crank battery only needs to be replenished enough to start it, your isolator will protect it from any further draining. Your second battery on the other hand is likely to be needed for running the fridge, lights etc. back at camp, you don't want that half flat when you camp.

You can always use the second battery to jump start you if need be.

                  Cheers Andrew

Personally I don't like it out the front of the bar, too exposed. I fitted mine under the bonnet.

That's a thought, I'm very green to this 4x4 stuff, been playing with modified and classic cars all my life,
Now that I'm getting older the Prado is perfect for the family, although i need to convince the wife to drive WRX so I can drive the Grande to work!

My solenoid control box has sat on the bar for 5 years no worries. Have also got a large isolator under the bonnet so nobody can operate the winch without my knowledge.

This is the style of isolation switch I have used for my winch, you can get them on ebay or at a marine accessories retailer
