  • aftermarket DVD/GPS install and fuses

G'Day, after using the excellent resources of this forum to take apart my dash and install an ebay bought unit, i thought i would add a bit of knowledge i learnt in the process. I bought the eonon 6.95" dvd/gps for $280 posted, incredibly cheap, hopefully it will do the job for a while. The reviews on whirlpool forums were generally positive but i have seen a few negatives. As always you hear bad things about anything on the net as the satisfied people generally dont report back. Taking apart the centre console was very easy with the photos posted on here, most of my fitting problems came from the big bundle of wires at the back being squashed up on the metal bar running through the dash, cable ties are helpful there to pull the wiring up as high as possible. The other problem i had was removing an old Nokia hands free kit attached to the old Toyota head unit, before i removed it and the spliced wires to it, my DVD unit worked fine, but i thought there is no point in having it attached when the new unit has bluetooth, so i undid the joins and took it out. Unfortunately i had forgotten to take off the negative battery terminal before i removed it and i blew fuses. I tracked down a radio 2 fuse in the engine bay, and that was fine, and then found the radio 1 fuse, which was blown. So i replaced that one and it still didnt work, i had also lost my clock and temp. I looked at the inside fuses but couldnt find anything to do with clock or radio, so i decided to try a professional installer, of which there arent many who are not flat out doing other cars. I just wanted a 5 minute check but was told, 'too busy mate'. After much head scratching and a bit of footy watching i went back and tested the blue with yellow stripe wire, which had 12 volts, and the grey wire which had nothing, so back to the fuses inside, dome? no, interior lights work fine, ACC? of course, blown. Replaced that and it all worked well, put all the dash back and it fits perfectly. GPS signal from the antenna on the dash is perfect. Loading the Kudos gps software instructions was found on youtube. DVD's play well , sound is excellent, have the usb and ipod cables in the top of the glovebox compartment. For a cheap well fitting option it seems excellent, the seller in HK answers emails immediately, fingers crossed it will do the job.
