  • Noise under bonnet 2007 D4D, with accessories switch on

Yesterday when I had the accessories switch on , but motor not running, noticed a noise coming from near the turbo.
Hard to describe but it was a gurgling type noise and when I switched accessories off it sounded like water going down a plug hole.

Took it to Toyota this morning and they said the new D4D and V8 had the electric motor stepper which made the noise I was hearing.

Said this is normal and was just the unit doing its job.
Earlier models do not have this electric motor stopper.

When running noise obviously can't be heard.

It's most likely the stepper motor that alters the turbo vane geometry. Just a guess.

Noticed a slight buzz/whistle from my 1GR-FE tonight with the ignition on but not running. There's a lot of electronics under the bonnet of these vehicles, it's not surprising that they make a few odd noises.

    Cheers,

    Drew.

being a d4d it has a variable vane turbo which is controlled elctronicly using a stepper motor as drew said

on acc and on position without the engine running there will be an audible ticking or buzz.

put your hand on the motor on the side of the turbo and you will feel it.

Re: Noise under bonnet 2007 D4D, with accessories switch on

I have just purchased a 2008 D4D GXL (1 week ago) and too have noticed this noise from the stepper motor on the turbo. Is this noise common to all the D4D's ? or some do and some dont?

        Cheers
