  • What's high km's on diesel motor ?

    Hey All,

    First post on these forums

Looking to join the ranks of being a Prado owner

I have never owned a diesel vehicle before, from what i have researched and been told i understand that the diesel motors should last longer than a petrol ? under the right operating environment of course.

I am struggling to decide on a few diesel prado's of course my budget is limiting me.

    Im looking at a 2004 with 190,000km or a 2006 with 270,000

Both are around the same price with logbook service records etc.

I'm Leaning towards the 2006 as it obviously newer but am a little worried about the km's .

Love to hear from anyone that has been in a similar position

    cheers

    Adam

hi zutta and welcome, if both cars have a full service history you should be pretty right with either, I personally would go with 1. the vehicle in best overall condition or 2. if they are both good, the newer of the 2. I personally would be happy with 270k on a well looked after vehicle, my brother in law (diesel fitter) says jokingly thats just run in

      Service history is the key...

Don't forget that there are alot of other rotating components other than the diesel itself that have to be taken into consideration also - drive train, diffs, trans, cv's, etc. If in doubt no harm in getting an independant 3rd party inspection either.

Exactly........gearbox,clutch uni's diff's etc etc...........270'k on the motor may be ok but everything has an operating lifespan........even the drivers seat will wear out eventually...........IMO a car with 270k is more than 3/4 worn out........expect to do some replacing of components at that many k's.

IMO 270k is not even half way, my seat is like new, close enff to 270k runs like new.
If u dont service it at all, 270k might be 3/4 worn out, they're Toyotas we talking about not crummydores

            Thanks for replies,

I must add i plan to tackle a tour around OZ mid way through next year in it

I was thinking about the running gear also, To me even with log book its a flip of the coin with what trouble you can run into.

That's why I'm trying to buy soon so that i have time to go over the whole vehicle, replace what i need to etc.

LOL speaking of commies and KM's, MY mate has a VS 96 model, 640k. still going strong, Gets him from coffs to sydney every week for work.

You're taking a pretty big risk planning a round Australia trip in a high mileage vehicle. If anything does decide to go wrong mechanically then you're at the mercy of sub-standard or makeshift repairers in regional Australia who will charge like a wounded bull - that's if they are actually capable of carrying out the needed repairs. Don't get me wrong, you might have no issues at all but getting recovered or repairs in regional Australia has it's pitfalls and bang goes your holiday. Sure, there's plenty of back-packers zooming around in $500 bunkies that they simply abandon if they breakdown and go buy a new bunky. I bought my second new Prado and have a reasonable mechanical ability and also a financially sturdy backing so that worst case scenario I can pay to fix things. But not all people are like that. Think about the kids and the missus when you blow the gearbox up halfway across outback Qld or central WA and help is a long way off. I know, I just had to self recover 1200km when my injectors failed 3 weeks ago. Not fun stuff.

My 2008 diesel has had enough parts replaced on it that I'd seriously think twice before going to remote placed after 200 000km. Had a turbo, belt tensioner, water pump and transfer case seal done in 110 000km. I wouldn't have much concern about using the car for highway touring as a tow would be only km's from a public road.

It would be good to know how the kms were done, lots of stop start causes more wear than long steady runs. Either way that's a big difference in kms so I'd sway to the low kms.

                    Thanks for the reply's

Was also wondering about the late 06 onward with the D4D motor?

Would you still go with a say a 2004 with low kms over a 2008 with high km's ??

Do the D4D's have noticeably more power ect ?

Either way i know i'm going to have a some cash spare for things that need repairing.

As has been said before - depends where the kilometers were clocked up - If its a country car then it might be good as gold, if like me, I'll knock up 1-2000 fast km on the blacktop on any trip to the city. Then..... it could commute on Parramatta Rd for 2-3 hours each day, stop/start, 1000 potholes loaded with Tradie tools and then on the weekend get a solid workout in the bush or beach. Two totally different animals I reckon.
Car from the bush can be a better buys.
PS how much towing have they done? would they tell you?
                        Good luck with you purchase.

                            .
So that means my 2005 with almost 400,000 is 120% worn out?

Seriously, it runs better now than it did with half the km's showing.
I have no problem putting the speedo on 170 km/h true speed with the 265 x 70 x r17 BFG All terrains.

In my opinion, 270,000km is "just about run in"
