  • D4D Water Pump Leak

    Hi All,

I just noticed that Water Pump on my car has some collant stains on the bottom of it. It is not really leaking as i havent noticed any majorc collant loss, but the pink coolant stains and some corrosion is cleary visible on the bolts and the pump housing.

There is 70K miles on my car so not due a t belt or pump yet, but im in two minds now weather to replace it or not.( Planing a 3500 mile round trip in two weeks time.)
I know toyota sells a new gasket for the pump?

    Advice appriciated,

Mine did this exactly at 110,000 km (same same!). No obvious coolant loss just some staining. Toyota replaced it under extended warranty. I asked how long the pump would be ok they didn't have a definitive answer just that it should be replaced ASAP because it was usually the bearing that had started to die and that took out the seal. As the dealer didn't have a spare until later in the week he wiped it down but the stain was back within 30 or 40 km. There is a separate post on here how to change because it is a time consuming job which means the timing belt comes off. If you have extended warranty go for it. If you will do it yourself again I would do it and change the timing belt at the same time and just extend the next change if you still have the Prado. If I can find the other thread easily I will edit this post with a link.

EDIT: not quite the same thing...

I had the same issue, mine was in having a 110,000k service 4months back and it was noted during service.
Was told it was leaking slightly around the gasket.
Fortunately like mjrandom was covered under the extended warranty and the dealer just replaced the whole pump. Was told later it was a $650 replacement and apparently this problem was a bit more common on the diesels.
Oh well at least the new owner now has a new pump for another 100,000k

      cheers

110 000km pump life seems to be common. Mine was recently done at the same mileage. I suspect mine went early as the belt tensioner and belt was replaced at 95 000km. I recon the new belt and new tensioner put more strain on the pump pully. I'd imagine the bearing had some wear so there may have been more distorsion of the pump seal leading to early wear.

My pump leak was from the pump shaft seal not the gasket. The pully was wet at the back. Coolant was sprayed along the timing belt cover and air box.

I read on the hilux forum that the new super long life coolant some how attributed to pump seal wear. Not sure how true this is though.

They are fitting a new water pump as part of my engine renewal despite the original only having done 73,000km. And the mechanic said the original wasn't leaking but they fit a new pump to the new short motor.

Just had my 150 water pump replaced under extended warranty. 104000klms. Didn't think to take a photo. Was a very visible pink stain on the timing cover and pink trickle directly under it and a drop on garage floor. Happened very quick.Take the bottom bash plate off will be very obvious if it's like mine.

I believe the sll coolant causes more premature leaks opposed to the ll coolant.
                  It's always a slow leak.
It's usually always the internal seal, that's just how all water pumps shag.
It's likely would go for a long time without issue if you topped it up weekly 100ml?
But I'd say replace it, especially if you are travelling, they can let go big time.

Just look for the pink sticky stuff.

The water pump in my previous 2008 120 started leaking at 75k, again just pink stains under the pump. Cost around $700 to replace

Mine went and was picked up during injector replacement at 125,000kms. Replaced timing belt at the same time.

I've had a new spare sitting in the shed for a couple of years now. There wasn't any sign of a leak when I changed the timing belt.
