  • KZJ intercooler upgrade in size

Hi guys. planning to install a 3' Taipan XP at Cross Country 4x4 in SA as they are now the SA distributor......so now looking to also upgrade the stock intercooler on my 1KZ-TE to gain better performance as well as better EGT's for towing a 17' pop top.

The Cross country Intercoolers are pretty much the beez neez of coolers on the market....

My question is has anybody gone this mod before? any issues with fitting? will i need to fit a scoop? any feed back will be much appreitiated thanks guys.

Thanks Phil. yeah i have checked theirs out. Very impressive.the front mount looks great but i wonder how it would impede air flow to the radiator and if it would clog up with mud or dirty water. im interested in the top mount with a fan and maybe bonnet scoop as well... wonder if anyone has done this on here??

I am going to go water to air intercooler as the problem I see with Front Mounts and Top mount Air to Air intercoolers is that they are dependant on air flow to work. You don't get heaps of air flow when you are slowly climbing things or wheeling around places and thats when you want the power and torque. Water to Air is more complicated but once setup will definately work alot better. I wouldn't be too concerned with front mounts cloggin up as this will happen to your radiator anyways.

        Just my $0.02

        Cheers

Not 100% sure if there is room on the Prado's, but Berrima Diesel in NSW does a thermo fan style fit up on top of the intercoolers on Nissan Patrols. Works pretty well on the Top Mount setups.

          Regards, Jason.

yeah i used to have a GU and on removing the intercooler to take out the butterfly flap in the process of removing the EGR, i discovered that they have a standard pull through fan under the intercooler standard. pretty good i think. suprised the older tech 1Kz-te doesnt have it also. I wonder if one could be retro fitted??

Big Trev has a fan set up that is switched from the cabin, he reckons it works well at low speed. My mate has one in his Nissan which works as well. I have been checking out the air/water inter cooler sounds like it would work the best for low speed stuff.
