  • Real Life measurements for performance chips

    Dear All,
I have just installed a DPChip obtained from a fellow Pradopoint participant second hand. It is a little over two years old and came from a Prado 90. I have a Prado 120 with a snorkel which made an improvement to power only to be lost with the 70 series tyres. I had the chip installed by Berrima Diesel Service who also remapped it with the latest maps and software and installed it for the install price only. Thanks to them for that. I noticed an immediate change: less engine noise; more power across the range. To be able to really tell properly I would need a dyno, however, I was more interested in measuring what it was in real life so I performed a number of real life driving tests. I performed the tests on a flat road using the same piece of road for each test. They were performed twice and the times averaged.

    Results are listed below.

    No Chip Chip % improvement
    0-60 kph 9.38 sec 8.17 sec 12.9%

    0-100 kph 24.6 sec 21.1 sec 14.2%

    60-80 kph 7.10 sec 6.35 sec 10.56%

    80-110 kph 15.54 sec 13.75 sec 11.5%

I am not sure how this would be reflected in dyno figures especially off the engine but I am interested in how others have found their improvements.

I suggest that those of you who have chips that can be detached or turned off do the same tests so that we can compare real improvements in percentage improvement and post them up for all to see. I believe it would be interesting for all Prado owners of all models so I am posting this on both 120 and 90 forums. D4D owners with chips should also post as it is the % increase in performance we are interested in.

Sorry for the standard of the tabulated information, it got messed up when posting. I think you can work it out. I will try to reconfigure it to make it clearer.

      G'day, Just a thought. ...
Due to the timing impact and the resetting of the engine management unit for those with chips already ... which will be almost all of those being tested. I think that perhaps it would be a good idea to check performance with the chips in first, before dismantling the glove box, disconnecting and running with out the chip. According to threads on LCOOL there may be a period where the engine management unit resets itself, and that can take up to a tank of fuel to complete (that's a lot of $$). So measurements taken during the resetting period may be well off the beam as the engine won't be running to its highest efficiency
BTW I did a rough guess on acceleration improvement with a stop watch and telegraph poles, just before I installed my chip and I believe that the biggest improvement was around the high end and torque (Nm) in each gear range, not necessarily on accelerating from scratch (kwh - power).
Even so, I think this is a worthwhile exercise.
      cheers
      Roger

        Roger,
You might be right about that. I happened to do the tests with the chip removed and then replaced it and did them again. It would be interesting to do them again in a few days to see if there is a further improvement.

I have been getting some PMs on this topic so after a little time for people to do testing or get their thoughts together we should get some iinteresting reading. All those that I have not been able to PM, please indicate via the forum if you are prepared to make comment about your chip mods or do testing according to or near to the tests above.

          Cheers

would love to see some D4D times for the suggested measures. I tried the 60-80 in my V6 last night and since it was a single effort timed by the driver (me) I'm not going to quote it yet, I'll get an assistant (the wife) and try again. Might get to borrow the father-in-laws manual D4D for a comparision over Xmas
