  • Exhaust gas temperatures

    Hi everybody!

What are your overall thoughts on safe exhaust gas temperatures? Those that have EGT gauge, what kind of temps are you seeing? Taking into account both on diesel and petrol versions.

I lost a motor because of a high EGT once, so I thought that it might be an interesting subject to discuss.

On the NT highway with a 3in exhaust and chip my temps got as high as 550deg when overtaking. Ambient temp was about 34 deg. I have a 2009 120 series D4D and the EGT probe is after the turbo.

I did an experiment. I accelerated the vehicle from 0-100 km. at a wide open throttle without the chip. The gauge read 640deg. Then, I made the same 0-100 run, with the same throttle again, and on the exact same road but with my Steinbauer turned on this time. The EGT escalated up to 760deg!

If I keep on pressing the throttle the temperature even tends to pass over 800! I tried it a couple of times and I am not going to risk it again, so no more powerbox for me!

      Mine is 2005, 120 D4-D, 2.75’’ exhaust and the probe is pre-turbo.

Slightly on the topic, how much would it cost to get a temp probe + gauge installed? (parts and labour) and who can do this for me??

          Gday Arti.
I like your rig mate... As you have discovered, more accelerator = more fuel = higher EGT's
Our alarm is set for 550 degrees C and the alarm goes off regulary especially overtaking.
When Towing our CT it will sit on 550 all day if we let it, but Im careful about how much fuel I pump into the motor.
Our Prado is only a 4 speed auto, so often we will sit in 3rd gear on 90kph when towing just to keep the EGT's down and not thrash the motor out.
Those tyres and wheels on your rig are SICK.

            Hi All,

Does fitting a better/bigger exhaust system
Make any diff in keeping temp's down.
My std system seems to make a lot of

That sounds about right. My 1KZ-TE with DTRONIC does about the same with the same probe location. I have seen the logger show a peak of 790C, but I have the alarm at 720C with max boost of 11psi. When the bell rings, back off and/or change down a gear or three. If you want to see a correlation, watch the temp gauge (an accurate one) go up and down with the EGT as the oil cooler transfers the engine oil heat to the coolant. It's not a linear increase either, when it takes off the EGT readout becomes a blur of numbers.

Thanks for liking my car!!! I guess I am not the only one being careful with high EGT’s

Thanks! Mine is set at 700C. But I tend to keep my temps bellow 680C when I am cruising on a highway.

Usually only rings the bells towing the camper, but you can do it easily empty if you leave it in 5th and plant the boot! All blow and no revs!

I have had 650+ towing a fully laden camper trailer while using a chip it chip and 3 inch exhaust. I was doing 110ish up a long steep hill travelling toward Adelaide. Locals will know it as rather steep on Princess Hwy about 20km from town

I might increase the alarm temp from 550 up to 600 or 650!

So at what point is meltdown? 1000 degrees??

And what would say 500 degress post turbo equate to when being measured pre turbo?
