  • running at mid/high altitude: adjustment needed?

I live in Nairobi and drive mostly between 1600m and 1800m above sea level. The engine pulls great, no smoke, but does rattle pretty bad when cold. Are there any suggested mods for driving at this altitude? Can a chip be programmed/adjusted for the altitude?

    Hi Nairobiguy,

My understanding is that your car will adjust automatically to the higher altitude as far as mixture is concerned.

The rattling is a worry. I would suggest you check out the diesel rattle thread at http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ghlight=rattle settle down for a while as there's 174 pages. The bottom line is that a 07 D4D with rattle almost certainly needs new injectors with a new part number. Its all there, It may be most useful to read from the latest post backwards.

    Cheers

An 07 D4D and all other common rail electronic injected diesel engines, to my knowledge, have an air mass sensor that will work just fine at your altitude. It is simply measuring the air intake of your engine, not the speed of air but the mass of air, this information is then used to adjust fuelling appropriate to the air inflow to the combustion chambers. So the D4D will be doing as good as it can for the altitude.

PS You probably know air will be the limiting factor in power. There may be some advantage in a chip but more air will do more good. Just adding more fuel will increase combustion temperature but not more go if you do not add more air. So if you want you can spend money on bigger turbos and bigger intercoolers and exhausts and then you will see benefit of chipping.
