  • Timing Belt Change 2005 120 1KZ TE

    Hey Guys,

Had a quick search couldnt find what i was looking for so though I would post a quick question to those who are more mechanically minded than myself.

I am about to get my 150 000kms service done, including the timing belt. Now I have bought a timing belt and tensioner from toyota. (to supply to my mechanic). Although having a look at the kits on ebay i noticed they include other parts such as tensioner bearing, crank/balance shaft/cam oil seals, and water pump/gaskets.

Now my question is: Is it best to get these other items replaced whilst the belt and tensioner?

Please let me know if there is anything else I may have missed.

    Thanks

Idler bearing should be replaced and, unlike some, I also replace the tensioner as insurance. If the belt jumps a tooth or three the result is too horrible to contemplate. Water pump; well I left it for the second belt change as it was showing no signs of leakage, but after about 30000K it had a weep after a 12000K trip. I have fixed it with some Bars OEM tablets, but it may need changing before the next. A lot of people reckon to do it at the second and I would tend to agree, but sometimes the best laid plans.... I haven't touched any of the seals except the cam shaft on the old "If it's not leaking don't disturb it " principle ( I had to replace the head, so it had to come out anyway). One thing I did notice was that the camshaft seal is a viton seal, and these are renowned for chewing shafts.. The camshaft already had a groove you could pick up with your fingernail, so I would recommend going to a bearing place and getting a nitrile seal if you really want to change it. The nitrile seal won't last as long, but you are going to be in there again in a few years anyway so it is no drama to change.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Yes some say rebuild your engine before it blows up.......
At 150k you should get away with changing the belt, as per the service schedule.
It's not a problem on these cars of having tensioner's collapse etc like the Astras do!
Have a good check of the water pump, they can leak any time, now I find on these vehicles when they leak its usually slow, you can top it up till you get it changed.
No point changing out a perfecty good tried & tested waterpump or anything else either and fitting one that could be faulty.....
However it's smart to check all the bearings & if there's play in all the bearings - (usual proper mechanics)
We change oil because its contaminated, filters because they are getting blocked, etc etc, there's no point guessing at what's going to fail, as you might as well replace everything......???
If you don't mind spending money, you could go ahead???
But to me it's not even about money, it's about leaving things original untouched, that are working & proven.
Once someone is trusted to do the work you always have room for them to stuff something up too.....

300,000k I think there's more weight to changing the pump & other bearings,
But then you might as well do you front wheel bearings, c/v drive shafts, rear wheel bearings, alternator & starter bearings, engine bearings???? C where does it end?
Just update the vehicle if you don't trust it anymore.
Lastly there are thousands of 1kz's over 300,000klm that have only been serviced by the book or less & still going strong.
      Just my opinion......

Yes troy, at 150k on your clock I wouldn't worry about the water pump... Unless its naffed.
I'm glad I did mine at 240k... And I now know I'm good to go up to the 500k mark.
I personally think it would be carless ignore a water pump for that long.
Hey with your Km's I doubt you would even have to replace the tensioner and idler... being genuine parts, they are normally good enough to last the life of 2 belts.
It sounds like a straight forward case of a log book timing belt change.

              Hi Troy

I'm at the 145K mark and planning for my 150K timing belt change :-) I've decided to do the tensioner and pulley while I'm doing the belt. Of course as per above I'll check the water pump for leaks. Seriously I rang Toyota today and they quoted me $813 for the service which equated to a timing belt, oil filter and engine oil...of course lots of "inspections". At $136 per hour I'm sure they are going to easily soak up my money. So I got the price for the tensioner, bearing and belt and it was $220 and they quoted me $400 to install..So my service will be the timing belt, tensioner, pulley, oil filter & oil, diff, gearbox, transfer oils, grease tailshaft and other tightening as per the manual. being very anal I've bought a properly calibrated torque wrench for the job, breaker bar with 22mm socket to turn the crank and a bottle of "liquid paper" to mark the pulleys so I can see the marks. I've gone over and over it in the manual, even found the Toyota original engine manual online and compared all torque settings... I'm not thinking its overly simple but if you pay attention to the refitting of the belt and mark it properly on the outset, it looks like a straightforward job :-)

                Hey Guys,

                Thanks for your replys.

I already have the belt and tensioner. But think i might get the idler pulley done as well at the same time. I wont take mine to toyota i have a good mechanic that will do it for me. By any chance does anyone have the part number for the idler pulley?

                Cheers
