  • Fuel filter comparison

I've been looking for a cheaper alternative that is just as good or better than the genuine Toyota filter, but its hard to find any real info about the various options. Such as micron size and efficiency. I've read on here that the Toyota one is 2 micron but is it? On the Toyota website theres just a vague mention of 10 microns. So where do people get their info from? The Donaldson one is what I'm leaning towards but its only 10 micron too so is that enough? And let's not forget efficiency too. I just want to compare apples with apples.
Oh and I'm talking about the under bonnet filter.
Where is the info I'm looking for?

I think from memory the Toyota one is 2 micron? Flow rate required is +90L per hour.

It is very important that the micron is fine enough, the electronic injectors in these require fine filtration, much finer than in the old mechanical setups.

Roo would know, you can PM him @ ##########

PS perhaps anouther route is to fit a pre filter of 30 micron and then extend the service of your main filter? That is what I'm looking at doing and keeps all the existing Toyota filters for my warranty requirements.

I run a 10 micron boat fuel filter from the states. Then straight into the 2 micron Toyota filter, never had an issue.

      my 4 cents..

But where are you getting the info from that the Toyota one is 2 micron? Thats what I want to know. Hard facts not "from memory ".
I wasn't looking at putting an extra filter on.
And I think roo is still banned.

You can still PM Roo (so I'm told), he has the facts, I have a suspect memory. I spent 30mins of my time trying to find the facts for you too no avail.

Sorry for trying to help you.

That one will do amts, I found the above just now also.

Not sure Roo's account will be taken as fact? I was looking for the Toyota spec.

See what I mean? So hard to find actual specs.
Thankyou Peril and Amts for helping me look.
I know Roo knows his stuff, and I've read every thread on here about filters. Most deal with adding an extra filter which seems to divide people on whether its a good idea or not. Pros and con's for everything.
And Peril, I'm sorry if it sounded like I was dismissing your memory as not good enough. That wasn't what I meant.

In my professional opinion, adding a primary fuel filter is pointless, adds stress to a fuel system that is expensive to repair just to prolong the life of the oem filter. These fuel systems rely on high flow to cool and lubricate the HP pump. Adding another primary will reduce that flow.
For long term protection invest in a water trap/agglomerator (that means coalesce particles) with a warning device for water contamination.
A correctly sized water trap will not impede the design flow in the system.

WRT to aftermarket filters, pick donaldson, ryco, Sacura, fleetguard, max. I have seen Coopers passing dirt straight through the media blocking the inlet strainer on a 1HZ.

Because I'm interested, like evreyone here, whilst chatting with Roo this morning over another topic, I asked him what he has learned since the posts linked above. The original Denso information on the release of the D4D series was 2 micron primary filter, as stated. But since this information Roo had a filter dissected and examined, out of this they determined that it it was more ~6-8 micron filtration (Toyota was a bit optimistic).

He suggests if you want to 'exchange' the primary, and not run a secondary, too look at Raycor 2 micron 114L/h.

                        For info.

It doesn't answer your question Michael but its worth the read anyway http://www.donaldsontoolbox.com.au/t...e-air-filters/

I think you are being a bit optimistic trying to get an after market fuel filter that is better and cheaper than the Toyota one, cheaper should be easy but better might be a stretch.

I paid $64 for my last filter, how much do you think you might save on that?

                          Cheers Andrew

Yeah I read that the other day Andrew, thats what got me thinking about all this.
And you may be right about a filter cheaper AND better than genuine. I was hoping one of those Donaldson filter kits that come with air, oil and fuel filters for around $80 would be fine, but maybe not if they're only 10 micron.
Maybe I'll just stick to the Toyota one for now.
I'll look into the Racor when I've got time, thanks Peril.

Ryco Z699 is claimed to be 5 micron and recommended for a number of CRD engines but Toyota's are not mentioned on the product sheet. Made in PRC. The Wesfil/cooper equivalent is WCF104 for around $20. Tojo filters are made in Japan.

Personally I wouldn't try to save a few dollars on a main fuel filter for a CRD. I wouldn't have any issue using aftermarket for the in between tank fuel filter, oil and air. I'd change the between tank and air filters more often though.
