  • White smoke and gears slipping...

    Hi Guys...
Bought a diesel prado 2006 model on the weekend (KDJ120R) and the take up on the clutch pedal is very high and at certain revs going up a hill it slips (revs go up but we dont go any faster...) Also, parked nose downhill, it will blow white smoke for 30 secs or so, or at least till this morning when I turned the key and it turned over but stopped like something was preventing combustion. This happened several times.
I bought it from a dealer so I have a statutory 3 mth warranty but I would like a heads up in case they decide to do a dodgy fix on me...
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    Thanks, Nathan

Hi Nathan, not sounding good mate,

White smoke generally points towards the injectors/ seats.

Here is the link to all the d4d dramas

    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?t=12443

And the slipping is probably leaning towards yourclutch on its way out.

Hope it gets sorted mate, book him into toyota for a cold start check, and request the check the injector feed back values.

    Cheers

    Craig

Good luck Nathan, let's hope they don't try and drag things out, I guess one saving grace is that you just purchased it.

        Cheers

Might be worth a visit and report from your local NRMA/RACV/RACQ/RAA if you have any doubts about the service you are getting from your dealer.

Definitely sounds like clutch is worn past service life.

Definitely a clutch. My nephew just had the same issues with his D4D Hilux. Replaced and MUCH better now! Haha.

And Id be following it up super quick on the clutch before they decide to tell you its a consumable item which isn't covered under any form of warranty. Being as you only bought it last weekend to burn a clutch out in that time would be almost impossible but I wouldn't waste any time at all before you get screwed over.....Cheers Steve

While I am thinking of it, is there any way of telling whether the white smoke issue is covered up or whether they have replaced only one injector etc?
                    Thx Nathan

                      Some result...

So the Dealer salesman calls me today and says they have fixed the gearbox problem by replacing the clutch master cylinder - to fix a clutch pedal with very little take-up???!!! Also, they 'fixed' the white smoke issue by cleaning the injectors, is that even possible and if it is, is it effective at all and will it cover faulty injectors for a time period, e.g. my 3 mth warranty period?
Need help fast guys, picking it up tomorrow....
                      Thanks again, Nathan

Nathan no clue on the clutch but insist on injector feedback values and don't leave without them written on the service docket. If the readings are out of spec don't accept the vehicle.

That is BS what the dealer has done. Surprised that they haven't done a "courtesy" ECM flash as well.

Trust me, pretty much had the same treatment from a dealer. Long story short $13K later and I'm on a rebuilt engine.

Injectors, you need them done or at bare minimum the "sheets" (injector seals between the injector and head) need to be changed ASAP. Also get a photo of the oil sump pickup.

My money is on it is starting to get clogged with carbon.

Yep, carryback is on it here. Those seals / sheets / washers will need changing - perhaps that's what they meant by cleaning injectors (as one old think they needed to be removed to be cleaned) but clarify nonetheless. If it was a tank additive, grab a baseball bat and give him what for! anyway, on the clutch front, thayer may have adjusted the pedal so it feels lower too.

I'm normally not the bloke that looks into the negatives, but just dig a little deeper, and youll either be put at ease or taking it back.

yeh so I got it back - clutch still slipping, still blowing white smoke and yes they squirted injector 'cleaner' down the lines and poured it into both tanks. they replaced the master cylinder to stop the clutch slip. :-Z anyone know how to force them to do it properly? I am trying the office of consumer and business affairs but they seem like a toothless tiger so far...
Will prob end up buying some injectors off Baileys myself... are they hard to install?
