Ticking D4D

Hi Guys,
My 2006 D4D is ticking about where the injectors. It is irregular and not very loud. Can you tell me what this is?

Firstly!... Where are you from?... How many K's has your rig done?

There is two possibility's without jumping off at the deep end with the worst scenario's first so i would go simple with your process of elimination's!

#1: Have you checked your fuel filter as this can cause your injectors/fuel pump to get noisy if fouled or very dirty.

#2: Are you running a chip by any chance?

#3: If you are not running a chip that elevates fuel pressure and you are happy that your fuel filter is clean then an other option is to drop your engine oil (Run engine to operation temp/ Drop your engine oil and let it drain for about .5 hour) then use a mirror & torch (If you do not have an inspection probe) and check to see if your oil-pickup mesh is partially blocked with sludge via the oil drain plug.

Reason: If the oil pick-up mesh is partially blocked it will starve the oil supply to the engine and the oil-spray jets that lubes the piston skirts tends to starve first and can cause a ticking noise on the piston.

There is more to that story (Fouled oil pick-up) but eliminate those simple tests before going any further with any catastrophic thoughts

Is probably nothing to worry about but if you want to eliminate to ease your concern's then do them simple test's
