  • Couple of questions on the 80,000 km Service

    Hi Guys,

I have my 80k service due on our 2009 KDJ120 Prado Grande 3.0 T/D – 5 speed Auto & as we’ve only had the car for a short time. Previous history of the car was that it was used as a city car. No tow bar was fitted & service history was a bit all over the place.

I want to bring it back in line, so I know where it’s up to in terms of services. The service items (& Part No.) I plan to get done are as follows:

Replace engine oil and filter - Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 & Toyota Filter 90915 YZZD2.
    Replace fuel filter x 2 - Toyota Filters - 23390 -30180 & 23300-30310
    Replace brake fluid - Castrol Dot 3 x 2 500ml Bottles (or 3 depending on flushing) -
Replace front differential oil - CASTROL AXLE EPX 80W-90 - 1 litre
Replace Transfer Case oil - CASTROL AXLE EPX 80W-90 - 1.5 litre
Replace rear differential oil - CASTROL AXLE EPX 80W-90 - 3 litres
Replace air cleaner element - 1780130080

Replace rocker cover gasket? - 9043012031
Replace Auto Trans Fluid? – Lifetime fluid?

    My questions are:
Can I use the same oil in the transfer case as the front and rear diff, without any adverse effects?

Does the Auto Trans Fluid need to be replaced? We do a bit of towing with the Camper Trailer (1200kg) for maybe 3-4,000 km’s per year out of 17,000km’s. But it seems like the trans has lifetime oil?
    &
Do I need to replace the Rocker Cover gasket if there are no signs of leaking or should I just check each service or wait until injectors need doing? At the moment the injector readings are as follows:
    Injection Vol: 10.80
    Injection FB Vol idle: 1.47
    Injection Vol Learning: 11.09
    Injector Feedback Val # 1: 0.0
    Injector Feedback Val # 2: 1.0
    Injector Feedback Val # 3: 0.1
    Injector Feedback Val # 4: -1.5 to -1.3

    Other Service items:
    Check drive belts.
Check cooling system, hoses & connections.
    Check exhaust system.
    Check valve clearances.
    Check steering & suspension components.
    Check front and rear brakes.
Check park brake adjust if necessary.
Check lights, wipers, tyre pressure & all fluid levels.
    Check all air conditioning components.
Check battery electrolyte and fluid level.
Check all brake & fuel lines & hoses.

If you could let me know your thoughts or if I’ve missed anything else that would be great!!

    Cheers,
    Sean.

There's no need to change the gasket or the transmission fluid.

I've used the same oil for the diff and transfer case.

Also grease the prop shaft. Ensure the old grease gets pushed out by the new grease for the uni joints and about 2 pumps for the slip joints. Don't over grease the slip joints as you may blow the seals.

I would change the pollen filter too. It's located behind the glove box.

Also change the washer jets to the Hilux version and all interior lights to LEDs

Check the cv boots for any grease weeping and the shocks also for oil weeping. Also check the conditions of the shock bushes for wear.

Follow the tow bar harness around the bumper and check that it is properly sealed when it enters the body. Otherwise you will get dust entering at that point.

Replace engine oil and filter - Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 & Toyota Filter 90915 YZZD2 - For the money you can get proper diesel engine oil. Penrite Diesel FX from supercheap if you don't want to buy a 20L drum of Delo400.

Replace Auto Trans Fluid? – Lifetime fluid? - Check the condition. If you install an additional cooler and change the fluid, it will last a long time. If you're changing the fluid, you'll need 8L (2 x tins Toyota WS)

      My questions are:
Can I use the same oil in the transfer case as the front and rear diff, without any adverse effects? - Yes. Same oil is fine as you dont' have a rear LSD. 80w90 in the transfer case is fine as long as meets MT-1 spec.

You may also want to flush the power steering. Renewing the fluid will keep the seals soft and functional. 1L of dexron 3 fluid is plenty to do this.

EDIT - the oil is Castrol Magnatec Diesel 5W-40.

I'd like to get the tranny cooler done, so I may wait and get the fluid changed all at once.

Thanks guys, I'll add some of those extra items above to my list.

        Cheers,
        Sean.

          Hi Guys,

Just after some feedback on checking the valve clearences. From my understanding the rocker has to come off etc, which puts them pretty close to the injectors etc. My thoughts were to maybe hold off on this, keep it all in tact and then maybe replace the injectors and all that goes with it around the 120,000 km, assuming it all holds out that long.

          Any thoughts on this?

          Cheers,
          Sean.

Valve clearance check is due again at 120 thou anyway. That would seem to me to be a pretty logical time to swap them out as the only extra cost wold be the injectors themselves.

            Cheers Andrew

So is it a big risk to run it up to 120k without the valve clearence check, as long as the injectors are within spec's?

I'm thinking I'll get the sump pulled off and the screen checked, as this seems to be a good warning sign.

As long as the seats don't start leaking in the meantime. Check the sump strainer every service. But to save a few $ seems pointless to me.

Isn't it around $500 to do the valve clearance's?

                    It's part of the service!

Okay let's ask this differently. What are the risks of not doing the valve clearance's, given I can get them done when I get the injectors get done?
