Black smoke on acceleration

I was following my wife yesterday and her 2008 D4D was blowing black smoke each time she changed gears and accelerated would last until she reached what I would consider a cruising speed It wasn't doing it a month ago last time I was behind her
The vehicle is regularly serviced by Toyota
We were on a flat road
Any ideas what is causing this the vehicle has done 85k

Have you checked the air filter? Could be in need of a change. But all diesels do smoke if you give them some right foot. Just sit behind any Nissan navara or pooootrol haha! Maybe your missus is giving it a gut full?

Black smoke is unburned fuel, so as ghost said start with the air filter, and your missus right foot

Air cleaner is fine and as I have been behind her before it never blew any smoke and she always drives like the devil is chasing her
There are lots of 120s were I live and very few smoke at anytime, we were on a nice flat Road (Dampier Hwy) so wasn't under load
I know nissans smoke but I don't compare issues with a Nissan being similar to Toyota issue
My Hilux doesn't smoke when the misses drive s it both same motor

Try some injector cleaner in your diesel the next time you fil up.Could be dirty injectors.

Also spray the air flow sensor clean.
