  • 2009 with 180000kms, blows white smoke on start up

Has anyone had a problem with blowing white smoke on start up.
She uses just over the max suggested 1l to the 1000kms but only blows smoke for the first few minutes on start up.

    Any ideas or post experience?

Diesel? I have a D4D which blows smoke or 10 seconds on start up I the temp is below 18 degrees. Have discussed with diesel service coy. They have asked me to monitor - only happened 5 times since Jan 8 when temps low. One suggestion is a glow plug. Not sure and still looking for answers.

White smoke is usually fuel not oil. In this section there are a couple of threads about injector and injector seat problems with the D4D engine. Please read these carefully. It sounds to me as though you need to have the injectors tested and possibly changed out and while you are at it check the oil sump pickup screen.

If it is 180k KM's on the original injectors - time to get replaced. Trust me, mine did 170K odd km's and did the same thing.....Then well, $13K later...

Cheers Mjrandom, I've had the injectors tested and the injector seals replaced.
And it does tend to happen when it's cooler oldgrey. It is a grey white smoke and it is worse by far with the idle up on.

Cfryback, is that what the new injectors cost or the damage they did failing

I got my replacement injectors via Baileys (on this site) for $1100 (for four, after core).

Damage? The only "hint" I got that something was well wrong, was a flickering oil light and bad rattle - then it was all to late. Spun the front crankcase bearing, scored #1 cylinder. The only option at that stage was either a new long block ($18K) or a re-build. Check out my photo's of my injectors and the blocked sump screen - http://s177.photobucket.com/user/cfr...?sort=3&page=1

The thing is, TMCJ says without a doubt at 80K km service, valve clearances must be checked. Done properly, injectors need to be pulled. But that would put a Toyota service on the $2500 mark.

In your case, that should have been done twice.

The other thing the photo's show is the EGR caked full of oil - this is another common issue. I fixed mine with a catch can.

I don't want to do fear-mongering - but white smoke on startup is a BIG warning sign that something is on its way out.

Crikey, if it's using that much you have a real problem.

Mines got 196,000k's and doesn't use a drop of oil between changes, not even when towing our 2.4t van for hours and hours. Sounds like a problem to me.

I'm suspecting one of the sheets/seats has gone.

My 2008 D4D with 170,000kms recently started blowing white smoke on about every second startup regardless of the outside temperature. I read the related threads on this forum, got worried, and took it to Toyota for a cold start check. End result - two of the injectors were out of spec and all four are being replaced tomorrow. An injector check by someone (Toyota or other diesel specialist) would be worthwhile and may avoid a significant cost later. Toyota just required mine overnight to give me the bad news!
                        Cheers

I have had my injectors checked November and again January during a service. All within specs but one injector needs to be watch.

The current plan is to have it looked at by hi tech diesel injection in Adelaide. Soon as.
But I'm still concerned about oil usage. There is no leaks in the engine bay, no oil mist out the exhaust, and after the warmup no smoke. Also my oil level light comes on once I'm on the road, 5min runtime!? goes out again in a couple more minutes. This only happens with the last half of oil.
