My D4D died

My new short motor, 2 new injectors and sundry items came to $12,000 as per the invoice (covered by warranty). Their only out is if you can't show that every service was conducted by the book. Mine blew 2 weeks after a service by them (Toyota) at 73,000km. They never did the inspection at 40,000 and, with nearly 40K on my new motor, I'll be getting the valve clearance check done at the next service. I'm knowledgeable now so do my monthly injector feed-back value check and 5000km oil change and camera up-the-hole inspection of the pick-up screen just to be sure because I know they won't.

Engine is wrecked, I'm a bit sick in the stomach. Toyota dealer quote for "partial engine rebuild".

$22,600. I'm better of using it for a Bon fire than spending that on it. A "preloved" motor is about $7700 so I might go that option.

After 3 landcruisers/prados and me being their biggest fan I feel betrayed that this problem that seems so common can be easily prevented if customers were atleast told.

I'd say go pre loved, ring around check prices & make sure the oil pick up checked for cleanliness. If not clean, then don't use it.
Then, once you get it back, Contact baileys diesel & ask them to put you in contact with someone local to you to renew the injectors & seals.
Peeps, this can happen in between 5000klm services so not only do you need to check pick ups, but watch for other symptoms like running rough & blowing smoke etc.

Yes TOYOTA should have made owners aware of the risk here, but that would be admitting to so much more than they like to here at Toyo Aus.

Yeah I was prepared for like maybe 10 or 12 but 22!!! They say I caused it by not getting the injectors checked and the screen on the oil pump is blocked. I just can't believe that this is happening. And to think I was going to spend 75 on a new VX. Won't be from there. I might be a nissan bloke soon.

Does it have a service history? When was the last service? Not many service departments practise checking 1kd oil screens & injectors, it's not really part of the service. It should be on these.
The other brands have their own problems.
With new gxl diesel 200 series under 80k this could be the option.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I can get the same motor for $7700. Someone else has told me that there is another 07 prado diesel that is better than the d4d for sale near Sydney for $4500. I want it to be as original for trade so I'm going to go for the d4d.
And As far as I know there is only 1 type of diesel available in 06-09, the 1kd correct?

A 1KZ (2005) or the 150 series wouldn't be a easy swap would it?

The D4D aka 1KD started from '06 onwards. Get the D4D from the 06-09 years and it will be a straight swap. Definitely don't put in the 1KZ due to compatibility issues and the fact that it will look very sus when a potential buyer is expecting a D4D in an 08.

Sorry to hear that mate. It irks me how Toyota has just put it head in the sand over this issue. Even overseas they are addressing it.
Toyota man up to the problem, admit there is a problem and sort if out for the people. I guess they think if they don't admit , they don't have a class action or a recall it is cheaper. BUT
Look what it is doing to your reputation. You spent decades building that up with the 60/ 80/100 etc. People always remember the bad apples.
But i guess they don't care.
I wonder when some of the Toyota snr mangers see the nissan hand grande stickers on Toyota D4Ds they will wonder why.. bwahhh.

Anyway, Mitch see you if can get a decent engine from a wrecker, would be a cheaper option. I have seen a few around in the past.

Thanks bud will try. My car has the 1KD-TE motor, can I use a 1KD-FTV or are they too different. Seems to be plenty of the ftv motors for sale can't find a TE

A TE is the 1KZ-TE. The 1KD is the 1KD-FTV.
There is no such thing as a 1KD-TE

And make sure its from a prado not a hilux. I believe there is a difference with computer and stuff ?? Not sure what but I remember some one else grabbed a hilux motor and had painfull issues sorting it out. Also the the hilux is only 343nm the prado is 410. Not sure if this is to do with the computer or actual motor and other sensors and things but wouldn't be worth taking the risk I don't think.......Cheers steve

From memory it's only an ECU programming difference that de-tunes the Hilux. The engines are pretty similar except for a couple of relocated bits such as dip-stick, power steering, etc.

Can anyone tell me how I can be sure it's a prado one if they both have the same engine code?

I have just done a bit of research as this very question also has me curious! (Hilux D4D & Prado D4D).

I just compared both Australian Hilux 07 1KD-FTV 3ltr D4D engine against the Prado 07 1KD-FTV 3ltr D4D engine!

The engine block/ Cylinder head/ camshafts and piston part numbers are all different!!... And that is including removing the 2KD from the equation! (2KD is 2.5ltr D4D!).

From what i can see at a glance is that the Hilux is de-tuned through the cam-shafts as well as the ECU & given that the camshaft profile is different is more than likely why the piston profile is slightly different.... Hence all the part numbers are different but compression ratio is the same! (Bore & stroke).

I assume the block & head is different due to the Hilux having different external engine auxiliaries & i also believe that the Hilux was euro3 until approx 08 in Australia! (Maybe later!)... Euro4 3ltr D4D's have a water cooled EGR heat exchange and the euro3's don't!..

"ALL" Aussie Prado D4D's "ARE" Euro4! (I do not follow the Hilux hence i am a bit vague on them).

Now getting back to the question on how to distinguish the Hilux 1KD-FTV 3ltr D4D engine from the Prado 1KD-FTV 3ltr D4D at a glance??

I believe (Guessing at best) it is the engine number?......

The next question is what is that number!! ?????

Truth is i don't really know for sure as i can only see part numbers next to the year & model?... Lol

Suggestion!! .. Why not start a poll for members to give just year model (Obviously Prado D4D's only.... Hilux would be a bonus!) and the first number of there engine number and see if a pattern appears with the numbers!

Obviously there is guys who work for Toyota on this forum but I'm not sure if they want to share?

I think (Guessing) that the Hilux engine number starts with the first number being either a number "5" or "7".

For example the first number of my engine number is 1KD1xxxxxx.

Ending on that note here is a link i found on a mob in Sydney that reco engines but you have to exchange units (New engine for old) so i guess freight plays a roll in total price!

I guess that if they are re-building engines then they "should" be able to answer (Confirm) your question concerning cam/piston profiles and of course the difference between lugs on the engine block & cylinder head for your engine auxiliaries!

The part numbers for HiLux are probably different because it is made in Thailand. Guessing that the motors are too.
