  • 2008 diesel prado engine power loss issue

    Hi,

I have the 2008 D4D diesel prado auto and have recently experienced a couple of issues, when I am in heavy traffic (stop and go) for a period of say 20+ minutes the prado seems to all of a sudden lose alot of power and throttle response becoming quite sluggish (abit like lag where you accelerate and it takes a second or two for the power to respond, although the power is drastically reduced). It doesn't stall just is not as responsive as it should be, it's happened to me twice in recent weeks now, driving around in normal traffic it's fine. The prado has done 143,000 km's, has been serviced every 10,000 since new.

Appreciate any ideas, i've rang the local Toyota service dept and they've got no idea... thanks in advance.

Sounds a bit like its going into limp mode, if its happening in traffic engine temp might be an issue. The gauge in the Prado (and many other makes) is dulled so it doesn't react until the temp is very high, I've seen 96 degrees on my scangauge and the dash gauge is still on half like it always is.

A couple of years ago on a desert trip we had a Pajero doing similar to what you describe and the OE temp gauge wasn't showing an issue but ultimately after getting home it turned out to be the viscous fan not working properly and the over heating and the computer putting it into protection mode.

Do you have a scan gauge or something else you can accurately monitor engine temps with? Might be a good reason to grab one if you don't.

    Cheers Andrew

If you have Techstream you could record the live data from the ECU (assuming you don't find a recorded fault code straight away). Go for a drive under conditions that replicate the problem. Save the file once the problem occurs and then you can look through the data to see all the parameters at the time of the fault and see what's happening.

If it was limp mode you'd have a CEL event.

Edit - sorry tech speak - the check engine light would be on..

Not necessarily, I forgot a line going to the throttle body when I did my catch can. Went into limp mode, no CEL.

Correct, I once left a connection off after some work and it went into limp mode, no check engine light came on.

                  Gday Paul
I have a 150 series 2010 Prado turbo diesel 6 speed manual doing a similar thing as you reported a couple of years back with your 120 series. Did you work out what the reason was for the momentary loss in power? Mine has only done 70k with regular servicing. I'll explain exactly how mine is manifesting itself for the purpose of the forum in case any one else wants to chime in. Travelling in top gear on a flat road without towing a trailer and no air-conditioning on, everything is sweet, however if there is a slight incline where the car needs to accelerate just slightly to maintain cruising speed, I get a momentary loss in power a bit like on the old cars when the air-conditioning would kick in and you would notice a drop in power, except mine feels as if its a total loss in power but only for a split second and then picks up and off it goes. I'm doing an outback trip and whilst it doesn't really effect the overall performance of the vehicle, I dont want to get stuck outback of no where if there's something I can do to sort it out before I go. Ive recently replaced both fuel filters and run a turbo cleaner through it but after all this its still happening. Solution and or thoughts on what it could be greatly appreciated anyone.

                  Cheers
                  Jono

                    See how it goes.

                    Possibly a sticking Scv.
