My mates 07 diesel has smoke and rattle due to the seals having let go and bogged up the oil pickup screen. This has then stuffed the rings and the pistons are knocking around in the worn bores. Toyota have told him "too bad". That's after he was told at a prior service that a bit of smoke was nothing to get too concerned about.

Hi Guys.
I just took my 07 1KD (74,000kms) to a diesel specialist here in Adelaide. My injector feedback values:
Warm
Injector 1: -0.2
Injector 2: 0.6
Injector 3: -1.1
Injector 4: 0.6
Cold
Injector 1: -1.8
Injector 2: -0.4
Injector 3: 1.4
Injector 4: -0.6
There recommendation was to replace all 4 injectors and fit a secondary fuel filter with less micron tolerance.
The injectors are very noisy when cold. Once warm, periodically I get a 'pop' when I start up. Sounds like its coming from the exhaust.
What do you think?

Hi Fronty;
I won't answer the injector question as i've got an obvious conflict of interest there. - and i'm new to this community, that and theres plenty of people who can answer that question.
Filtration wise, i would Strongly encourage all people to be 'more' concerned about water traps / seperators than a lower micron filter. Don't get me wrong, the better the filter the better, but of the injectors that we see that fail early, more than 90% are due to water.
Hope this helps - good luck with it

My engine blew 2 pistons at 73,000 due to injector failure. I can't tell you what the injector values were at the time. They supplied a new short motor plus 2 new injectors (1 & 4) to replace the out of spec ones that caused the engine failure. As Roo says, anything outside + or - 3 is a throwaway.Dave

Looks to me that your injectors values are within spec.
Between -3 and +3
I'm no diesel expert, just going by the numbers mentioned on the forum and by Toyota.

Please comment away. l have 7 days remaining of my extend warranty. l've convinced toyota to have one More look at my injectors. But they appear to be well within the acceptable tolerance. So am I wasting my time with Toyota? Or is the diesel specialist just after my cash?
If Toyota just offer to clean my injectors should I be happy?07 White GXL D-4D & 6 Spd Manual. Sovereign Bar with 3 LF 240's. RedArc dual battery system. Icom Pro 440N UHF, Hilux washer upgrade, Ironman 2in lift and 4 new injectors

I doubt Toyota will offer to do anything with the injectors because they are within spec. I'd asked Toyota to drop the oil and inspect the oil pick up screen. If there is no problem, you pick up the cost (shouldn't be too much). If the screen is blocked insist Toyota change injector seals under warranty.

I see Injector seals as a wear and tear item - (just like brake pads and tyres)
The Inj seals are spec'd for replacement every 45k here across the ditch in NZ
Oil service due every 7500km and full service due every 2nd oils service
All my Inj feedback values were under 2% when tested at dealer , however my engine knocked badly when cold after 130,000's
(Being the first of the 120's with the D4d it had the non DLC injectors fitted from factory)
Advice from my diesel specialist - CLEAN THE FUEL TANK ( and remove alge growth -diesel bug ), install Racor 2 microm filter with water trap after the OEM filter
This was a must do before having injectors replaced
Think I have posted before here - Toyota NZ have an offer for fitting a full set of new DLC Injectors, seals etc with new delivery pipes for $1200 fitted by the dealer !
This applies to Hi-lux - but when I called them the soon agreed to the issue and offered me thye same deal for the 120
I check the oil screen every oil service and so far it has been fine.
Shame I cant source the injectors for that price and send them to you guys/gals in Oz07 Prado 120 D4-d

Hi Roo,
I disagree with where you recommend the 2 micron filter placement
The factory filter will be doing nothing but passing fuel as the 2 micron will have filtered better than the OEM does.
And this would cause the 2 Micron to be suspect to premature flow restriction due to clogging as itn filters 5x finer than the OEM
Surely the correct way is to use the OEM to filter the bulk or the larger contaminates ( above approx 10 micron) , then have the 2 micron filter the output from the OEM filter to a higher standard
Correct ?
This is the way multiple filter sets are run
Bigger coarser filter then to a smaller finer filter
The Racor I use is a R120a with the R12s element - smaller unit than the R230. My diesel specialist recommended the R120a and said he had done flow tests which were more than ample for the 1-KD engine.. He had na R120a fitted to his 07 120, which he uses for towing heavy equipment on highways and it worked perfectly for 100,000km before he changed to a 15007 Prado 120 D4-d

Roo I see you nd your knowledge is very well repsected around here and I respect that too -
I also have knowledge- 30+ yrs trade exp and placed #1 in the world outside of Japan for Subaru technical
Anyway
Am I wrong in seeing that the 2 micron will remove more contaminates than the OEM as it filters finer - hence if fitting the 2 micron filter before the OEM will cause the fuel leaving the 2 micron will not be filtered further by the OEM as the fuel will 5x cleaner than the OEM can filter to
Do you not agree?
Unless your going to run a filter thats say 30micron +, which you would then fit before the OEM a pre filter
As for the flow rates- we will have to agree to disagree about what is needed - max return flow is at idle
This size racor unit is approved by Toyota NZ and is recommend to be fitted if there is any issue with fuel qualityLast edited by Rick NZ; 31-03-2013, 04:50 AM.07 Prado 120 D4-d
