  • Question: Is the 22nm torque for the injector clamp a dry or lubed value?

The shop manual will specify whether the fastener is supposed to be dry or lubed. In either case, prep your bolts. Don't forget that residue from the parts washer or that pie tin full of kerosene you're using to clean parts has oil in it. Even a quick blast of compressed air to dry off a fastener will leave an oily film behind, affecting ultimate torque. If you're really fastidious, clean up with some aerosol carb or brake cleaner, followed by more air.

      • Latest Toyota ad says Hilux with it's "famous unbreakable 3L turbo diesel engine". What have they done to make this engine unbreakable? It still has top mounted inter cooler so is more akin to the 120 than the 150 series. It always had a slightly detuned engine, down on power compared to the 120.

        • Job complete

To recap, my issue was excessive white smoke on cold start, 1 day after buying the vehicle this issue was visible. I'll get to the SOB who sold it saying it was running smooth and performed exceptionally well later.

Pulling off the inter-cooler reveled the likely candidate.

Note: This is a very early 1KD-FTV, there are 2 types of injectors 1 & 2 are the same and 3 & 4 are the same
          23670-39010 (1 & 2)
          23670-39020 (3 & 4)

#4 was covered in crud (technical term) which tells us that this issue has been present for quite some time.

So on to pulling the injector to see what was going on
White smoke on cold start solved.

Blown injector seal on number 4

          Injector port number 4.

You can see the gunge (technical term) down the injector port, a result of the previous owner ignoring the issue.

          Shot of the injectors

New seals were of the coated kind.

          Now to the SOB.
When i confronted him over the phone regarding the white smoke he sent an email which basically said
Make sure you let the glow plugs warm up!
Check the glow plugs they can go at any time.
Check the sensor in the air cleaner
Ringing a diesel specialist is the last thing I would do.
I am surprised you do not belong to a club, or have a friend with one. there is a whole lot of knowledge re 4WDs out there. You only have to ask.

Well the information here is worth 10 fold of what his 4WD club gave him, as if you look at the condition of the connector for injector #4 the issue had been happening for quite some time.

I am very happy now as the truck runs sweet. and ill leave it up to karma to take care of him.

########## has been fantastic - but I noticed in the previous owner's "Log Book" from their non-Toyota "service center" they remarked the same thing - glow plugs.

I can't say for NZ, but I don't think I have EVER seen the "glow plug" light on the dash....

              • The little curly yellow wire emblem that illuminates for about 5 - 10 seconds appears in the lower right side of the dash when you turn the key to on. You're supposed to wait until the light extinguishes before hitting start. It's the same curly wire emblem that all the old glow plug equipped Toyotas used to have. Page 10 of my owners manual calls it a engine preheating indicator light. Page 250 states: 1. Turn the key to "ON" and verify that the engine preheating indicator light has come on. Keep the key in the "ON" position until the light goes off.

I recant this, the light does come on - momentary, then goes out.

I was under the impression that the "glow plug" light was on for a prolonged period of time. Sorry for the confusion - my bad.

The time the light stays on for is dependant on the coolant temp
had a -4deg morning last week, light stayed on for 4-5 sec
+3deg weather it just flicks on then off immediately

That's a good read, thanks John.

I've never really dealt with glow plugs before - as the snow cats would "just start" - when it got to -20C we just left them running 100RPM of off idle and plugged in (block heater). The tour coaches (Prevost and MCI) that had Detroit Diesels, had programmable Webasto engine pre-heaters.

Not much call for the above here in Aus. - but I will say the Webasto system is awesome, as brings the whole engine up to running temp.!

                            • I have never seen the glow plug light come on at all. I remember reading about it in the manual when I first baught the car and looked for it, but it doesn't come on at all, maybe living in Darwin has something to do with it.

I'm in Darwin and have the 120 series. My glow plug comes on for about 1-2 seconds. Even in the afternoon. Just checked when turning the key to ignition...
