Yes Rick, finally got around to fitting the injectors that you supplied to me last year. Number 4 started at -2.7/-2.8 with a quick flash to -2.9 so I thought it was time to change them. I've also got a big trip next month and didn't want any hassles away from home.Dave

Make sure you read the letters and numbers correctly. I took a digital photo of each injector top to make sure I got it right.

Number 4 had taken a pretty big dive over the last couple of months. Just did a mates 09 120 with the tech-stream. He only has 80,000 on the clock and number 4 started cold at -1.4 but his injector volume started at around 18mm3 before settling to high 8 low 9. Even though mine got 2 new injectors in late 2012 following the engine failure they were the older style injector - not the 316s. Should be good now with the newies in.Dave

I did the job by myself. Got a sore bum from sitting on the radiator support panel all morning and sliced one of my fingers on a hose clamp causing it to bleed everywhere. I used a "How to" write up available on that other Prado forum. The one with pictures that's really easy to follow. I programmed the injector codes using my tech-stream on the lap top and also fitted a new OEM filter. The car drives really nice now and pulls just as hard as the brand new 150s at work.Dave

Well I have finally picked up the car after its BDG injector replacement. 125,000kms and smoke on start although all injectors on spec but two looking close.
Did not go all according to plan.
Dropped off the car Monday last week for Tuesday/Weds injector fit. Got a call from the garage that the head looked very carbonised so much so that the valves wouldn't close and that this what was allowing fuel to leak into the cylinders and cause my early morning while smoke. Agreed that a head job was required as well.
Then they rang to say that they noticed that the water pump was leaking - agreed to a new water pump. They also noticed that the engine had over-sized pistons and came to the conclusion that the engine had been out of the car for some reason before it was sold. I bought it from a Sydney dealer about 11 months ago. Some of the re-wiring work was a bit dodgy.
Couldn't get it back until today (week later) but very pleased with the outcome as when they came to fit the water pump they decided it was better to buy a complete kit including timing belt and did that as well.
It is running like a dream - so very quiet and smooth. Although cost $5264.10 I am happing with the quality of the work, the trouble that Gary Sheppard Motors (Queanbeyan) went to explain everything and the fact that it had oil and fuel filter changes and other fluid changes and checks.Terry

If your head came off they would have also cleaned your intake of the crap caused by the EGR which is a good thing. Now is the perfect time to fit an oil catch can so that it doesn't happen all over againLast edited by qwerty_steve; 26-08-2014, 09:02 PM.

Agree with what you said and the mechanic and I discussed yesterday about catch cans and he was an advocate. But when I went in to pick the car up he had a change of heart. WHY?
Apparently he had taken my head to get cleaned and another (from a hi-lux) that had a catch can installed for some 40,000kms and my head was in better condition. We discussed this and he said that the D4D with the catch can had very dry carbonisation and the valves were very pitted and mine weren't.
Look I don't know what all this means but when I asked if I do nothing when will I need to get the head done gain he said about 80,000kms. Suits me that will be about 6 years.
The car is running beautifully.
Happy to have other comments.Terry

EG #1 If the hilux had only done 40k then there is something seriously wrong with it in the first place?
EG #2 If the hilux had high K's without a catch-can "Then fitted" catch-can & only did a further 40k before removing head then two questions arise!
#1 If engine was heavily carbonated then it will carbonise into a hard crust! (Once catch-can reduces oil saturation into the intake manifold & port).
#2 If used a thin engine oil (Increased engine oil blow-by as diesels have a very high combustion compared to petrol engines) or over fueling (Chip or worn injectors) would increase combustion temps with increased soot particles and this could increase premature carbonation and hot spots.
Worn piston rings (Not normal below 200,000km min) or increased blow-by (Thin engine oil) will cause excessive oil burn and premature carbonation of the exhaust port and the crown of the piston but not the induction port as the induction only draws cool air (With cooled exhaust gases via the EGR)..... And oil that is drawn from the turbo inter-cooler once it has turned back into oil from normal blow-by mist of course!
Unless i seen the engine for my self with the full knowledge of that vehicles history in question EG: how many K's/ oil type/ chip/no chip/ worn injectors, there is just too many variables to his conclusion and the catch-can is not one of them!
Is your choice but i would fit the catch-can as the engine is not designed or relies on oil into the intake system... It was not designed that way!
Long and short is, If i was you i would still fit the catch can!... Sooner the better i say!
ALSO!
Lets not forget that your engine had been apart before you bought it for what-ever reason so that is not a good comparison for with/without catch-can comparison or conclusion?
I personally am over 183,000km (Head as never been removed) in my 1KD-D4D 2007 model and i would be damned if i would be pulling the head off mine every 80k??..... He must like doing cyl head jobs!.. Pardon the punt! Lol
On that i am glad you are now up and running with a good as new engine
Cheers
