  • Went and saw my mate who owns Meteor Car & Truck rental in Townsville today. He runs GX diesels + Hiluxes. These vehilcle work all over Nth Qld. When I asked if he had experienced "the rattle" he said he replaces the fuel filters on delivery as he doesn't trust the Tojo model to get the water out of the fuel. He has not had this problem on the D4D. But ... he said anyone who gets fuel from an old petrol bowser (or drum at really remote sites) is looking for trouble.

He's had 2 GLs totalled recently. One in Mt Isa where the driver swerved to miss a cow and flipped it back on to its wheels - still drivable but not much roof left and the other on the Bloomfield track where a church group lost it on a corner and went a**e into a tree which bounced them across the road and then went front into another tree. Both paid $5k excess!

    • Just as a side-note regarding the quality of Diesel in OZ:

The D4D motor came out approx 3 years earlier than it was released in Oz. Toyota's excuse for having such a long delay was that Oz fuel was too dirty. The cynics (myself included) chalked it down to Toyota being arrogant and selling us an inferior diesel motor "for as long as they could get away with it" or until it affected sales.

Seems that there was no conspiracy, rather the reasons were valid.

Still doesn't excuse Toyota from selling a $60K 4WD with a crap / inferior / defective / not tolerant enough Fuel filter / system.

      • OK so what sort of filter should be used? There has been a suggestion from some other posts that the filter may have been changed by Toyota in more recently produced cars (different colour etc). Can this one be trusted and if not, what sort of filter should be used instead?

        • Seems everybody assumes “Australia’s poor fuel quality” means our fuel is dirty and hence a good filter would get the nasties out.

What if “poor fuel quality” means they blend any old shite away in it (which not being solids can’t be easily filtered out) and these contaminants are damaging the injectors. Maybe our fuel just erodes the seats in the injectors?

So far I’ve read of this issue not only on Toyotas but Mitsubishi, Mazda/fords and various euro cars… and that’s just a quick google….

          Just thinking out loud…

            Any suggestions
I have the same coloured filter as the latest owners have got so I do not think there has been a change in filters.

I reckon it was just a stock photo from Europe that they have used.

            • I have a D4D Hilux work ute that has crackled since new. Very noticable when leaving my driveway at 5.30am, but no complaints from outside the cab. Its just wen I drop into 2nd gear accelerating.
Now done 110k, still crackles, and I suppose Im used to it

It runs on Shell Fuel from work, Servos wherever I need to on trips between minesites, and also Bio from when I fuel up occasionally at the minesite

Using genuine filters, serviced at work on the dot.

The other crackle I get is sometimes when heavy 4x4. (Not bogged, but when recovering from a sticky situation.....) Above the squeal of the clutch, I have heard the motor crackles again and I assumed it was the injection timing not quite responding to the conditions. Ie ECU not being able to respond to the inputs from throttle postion, engine temp, load, etc etc.

i dont think I have offered any answrs here, except that this one has made it past 100k, and Im not concerned by it.
Every other D4D hilux I have driven at work is same

                        • My D4D is booked in for its 60K service tomorrow and although I have not experienced the problem, I was amazed just now when the dealer rang me and said they were recommending that the diesel engines undergo an on vehicle injector service every 15K, would I like it done at the same time as the service.

Umhh, my response was immediate "so given that Toyota appear to have a recognised problem with injectors on the D4D, your fix is to get the customer to pay for the service to lessen the risk on Toyota" the silence was golden to which I added that I would take it up with the service manager when I arrive tomorrow morning. :x :x :x

Good stuff mate! what do these Service Managers take us for :?:
I hope they give you a clear and concise explanation of what the 15,000km Injector Service Procedure is, a few of the members would no doubt love to find out.
Hope it all goes well, particularly the Injector Service Cost being borne by Toyota :!:
