    • Well guys, the injector cleaner was just an on-car job where they connect up a drum of some crap and run it through the engine to de-carbonise the injectors but apparently it wasn't because of the injector problems that people are experiencing. The dealer figured it was a good idea to recommend as a preventative maintenance measure. I re-stated my view that it was to lessen the risk on Toyota at my cost but did not get a bite.

Anyway while I was waiting got talking to the guy who sold me the vehicle (I have a lot of repect for him) and he told me that he had been speaking with a chemist who works for one of the major fuel companies and his take on the injector issue was that in winter months the diesel actually has less additives and more diesel in it therefore enriching the fuel to the detriment of the injectors. FYI he also said that the D4D V8 injectors had a worse problem than the Prado and the last set they replaced took 2.5 days because they are a b*****d to remove and refit. I was also told by the service advisor that Toyota had yet to recognise that they had an injector problem.

I again made comment to them regarding my high fuel usage when towing the CT and they plugged their computer in and took a heap of data and then plugged it into a new D4D and downloaded the same data and there was nothing in it to identify a problem. What I did notice though was the difference in how quiet the new D4D was compared to mine, so whether it was because mine had loosened up after 60K, I don't know. Next step is there is a Toyota troubleshooting technician coming to the valley on the 8th August so I am going to try and be there to have a yarn to him and get his take on the matter.
So now I will see what the Prado does after its $99 injector clean & service

I had a look at the used Prado's in their yard and they had a 3/06 pre-D4D with 70K on the clock for $56,990 so don't know how that can be justified when I only paid $56K for the D4D with bullbar, snorkel and lights drive away. Salesman told me that others thought because of the shortage of new diesels they could make a heap of money and have now got caught because the market has dropped.

Tell you what, those of you who are wanting or waiting on a D4D, Cessnock Toyota have 2 in stock, a Silver Ash (I think Auto) and a Dark Grey (manual I think) - Matthew is the saleman and a top bloke.

i enquired at our local toyota dealer reagrding the new filter/separator? they had no idea what i was talking about.

does anyone have any part numbers?
The D4D Prado has a filter separator unit fitted as OE and I check mine regularly (undo the water drain tap) to drain any water that has been separated from the fuel.

Just on this, I probably put two to three tanks of fuel through my engine each month and coupled with longer distances of driving I believe this has a beneficial effect on the engine as fuel is not sitting around in the tank attracting condensation and it is also not slobbering its guts out around town, which I feel is better for the engine. In all the times I have opened the water drain cock on the filter I can honestly say that never has any water drained out.

          • Don't know if it is imagination playing tricks and I've only done around 50k's since the service but the engine does sound a bit quieter and seems to have a bit more oomph from the pedal. It will be interesting to see what the economy is doing.

            • I took delivery of my GX 2 days ago. I tried probing both the salesman and the service department on the rattle issue. In both cases they feigned ignorance of any known problem.

It was 4 degrees C here in Brisbane this morning and no problem with the start. Keeping my fingers crossed, or am I getting paranoid about it?

              • I wouldn't start getting paranoid until it starts to knock and surge, mine has been ok so far unitil I put the CT behind it and then the fuel consumption goes through the roof. Over the next couple of weeks I am going to hook it up again and go for a run to see what sort of figures it returns!!

                • These are the sad pictures of a 3.0 D4D Prado engine suffering a dripping injector:

I think the engine had 80.000km before it had a massive performance loss. It's an extreme example and hopefully an isolated case.

                            • im sure Mav and others dont think its amusing, nevertheless if it is 100% conclusive "the rattle" is pre-detonation - then Toyo's comment about "not detrimental" to the engine isnt quite true.

                                Har,

This is amusing for a diesel mechanic to read  .

The bad 'crack' or 'rattle' everyone is complaining about (in a D4D series Toyota engine) is pre-detonation occurring everytime you hear it. Eventually it will result in the damage in the photo's if it gets really bad.

                                Cheers,
Well then I reckon mine probably looks something like that considering how bad mine was.
