  • Prado / Hilux / Hiace death rattle

My first hand knowledge of the rattle is that it extends to all variants of vehicle that the engine is currently in.

Mine is a Dec 06 manufactured 2007 model Prado GXL.

Without telling the world what I do for a living, I can say that I work for the Govt and I am exposed daily to all three types of vehicles (D4D Prado GX, Hilux D4D twin cabs and the D4D Hiace vans.

It is about a 50 / 50 mix of rattlers to non rattlers, but they are all serviced by an outside source and as long as they run we dont care what type of noise they make.

Just a hint for everyone, dont purchase any cheap D4D Prado GX's that are white in colour from any auction place that sells govt vehicles as you could get a good lemon that has been passed on from us.

    • Heard another spin on this yesterday from an ex Tojo tech, who heard it from a mate who heard it ...........................
The injector pump is the issue. It is wearing prematurely and the particles are affecting the the injectors.
      Feasible?

It is definitely not just Prados, there are European forums for Hilux's that also have threads on this issue.

          • Now

Just to add again to this thread, just wondering if any one out there has had the rattle, and had it successfully fixed. I understand that some people have had the injectors replaced and this in some cases appears to resolve the problem, even if only temporarily.

Also how many of you have

            1. Told your local dealer,

            2. Emailed Toyota.

I just emailed Toyota here http://www.toyota.com.au/email-toyota
to advise them of the problem and question them what they are doing about it!

If you could all do the same, maybe we might get a more pro active response if quite a few of us email in.

(I also did this so i could at least then prove that I have reported the matter in case of a warranty claim down the track)

So come on Prado pointers!! Give Toyota an email!!!

            • Booked in for a service today and asked the service guy over the phone about this issue.

              "What issue????" Came the reply.

"The cold engine knock recent model D4D engines have been developing when starting on cold mornings"

Fuel pump. I was told. The fuel pump is the culprit. The way the fuel pump works means that it makes a noise when it's cold.

"So the report's about injector issues I've been reading all over the web aren't true??"

              "First I've heard of it......."

Bring it in ...... blah blah blahhhhh........

Has anyone else heard of the fuel pump line?

                • Mav (or anyone else) do the injector test figures (leakage?) come off the standard diagnostic check of the engine or is there some special test required? I guess the data isn't available on the Scanguage. If it is an automatic part of the service perhaps we should all ask for our injector readings / settings after routine services. We can then keep track of any deterioration and make sure that Toyota are aware us D4D owners are concerned.

They use something called an IT2 tester to check the tolerances of the injectors. Here is a link to it:

Not something the scanguage can pick up.

                    • How about running a poll for all Prados by year of manufacture starting from the first year the D4D was introduced in Australia?
We should state a year, mileage to date and if it rattles or not (or has rattled but since then was fixed). This way we can estimate the % of D4D engines affected at least on this site.
                      Just a thought.

                      • How serious are you guys about gathering the data ??

Online survey instruments are really easy to construct and offer a really simple way to gather anonymous multi dimensional data like this.

                        http://freeonlinesurveys.com/renders...oggyw1a5477243

This little example took 3 or 4 minutes to construct.

                        Cheers

                        • Great idea Chippy.
                          Might I suggest additions of

. Use of fuel additives (type)
                          . Brand of diesel

I don't have the rattle thankfully.

                          • I have C&P this from a survey I was given.

                            Just a few more:

peoples mechanical knowledge: I have pulled down a gearbox/engine and know how EFI diesel work (i.e spray patterns, pressures, etc), I can change brakepad/fit accessories, None.

how loud is the noise: D10 tractor going past (sounds like the ehaust system is loose), slight tappet knock, not really sure, I think I have a small noise and none. (to verify get them to record it on their phone)

Have they always allowed a 1-2 minute warmup or driven straight off after start up (there is a massive difference between warming a vehicle up standing still and allowing the oil to circulate)

                            Auto or Manual

how they drive the thing, make the engine slave (almost stalling) or drive it hard

have they own a diesel before

                            Have they used biofuel

Have they used or currently have a performance chip ?

                            Has toyota checked it

On occasion and when warm does the engine run rough

Have they done any cold water creek crossings while the engine is warm or have they had water in the air cleaner box ?

Do the have genuine toyota air cleaner or an oil foam filter or other brand
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

                            • This is a very good idea as it appears this issue is starting to make readers of the forum question weather or not they should be buying a D4D Prado. The Idea will be to keep it as simple as possible. Maybe give people a scale of 1 - 5.

How do you rate your mechanical knowledge: 1 = none, 3 = I've got spanners, 5 = Diesel mechanic.

Put ''X" next to all fuels you've used in your Prado: Gull Biodiesel, BP Ultimate, Shell, Dodgy Barry's Backyard mix.

                              Would you say you were a: (1) Aggressive driver (2)aggessive mostly (3) 50 / 50 (4) Aggressive sometimes (5) Grandma.

When cold starting, the noise you hear is (1) A D9 bulldozer (2) sharp popping noises (3)occasional harsher sound (4) bit rough for a moment (5) Purring kitten.

You service your Prado (1) every day (2) every three months (3) every 6 months (4) every 12 months (5) Say what now???

I'd be happy to help collate any results if required.

                              • OK ... take a gander at this one ....

                                http://www.esurveyspro.com/Survey.as...b-b1bd3a7f5d20

It has a few more questions .... but it also offers unlimited responses and data collection options.

If this is of any interest, or any use, please feel free to contribute constructive criticism regarding the question depth and format.

Remember ...... only around 30% of surveys ever get completed because most respondents feel that their privacy is invaded or they are being required to give information that they are uncomfortable giving. Keep that in mind when considering questions ..... as I believe that a survey of this nature is better off when it gets more people responding even if there is a lesser depth of questioning.

If there is enough interest ..... and after the survey is refined to a useable point ..... it may be worth making a new survey thread and asking the mods if the survey thread can become a sticky. What do you think ?

                                Cheers
