    It has a few more questions .... but it also offers unlimited responses and data collection options.

    If this is of any interest, or any use, please feel free to contribute constructive criticism regarding the question depth and format.

    Remember ...... only around 30% of surveys ever get completed because most respondents feel that their privacy is invaded or they are being required to give information that they are uncomfortable giving. Keep that in mind when considering questions ..... as I believe that a survey of this nature is better off when it gets more people responding even if there is a lesser depth of questioning.

    If there is enough interest ..... and after the survey is refined to a useable point ..... it may be worth making a new survey thread and asking the mods if the survey thread can become a sticky. What do you think ?

    Hi Chippy,
    Looking good mate I would Add the following:

    1. Q: How often do you change the secondary fuel filter?
    1.1 At Toyota prescribed service intervals;
    1.2 More often than Toyota service intervals;
    1.3 Less than prescribed service intervals.

    2. Q: At what level do you maintain your diesel fuel tanks?
    2.1 I let the main tank get down to a low level then fill both tanks;
    2.2 I keep both tanks topped up regularly unless on a long trip.

    Just some more data to aid analysis

          • A suggestion would be to add : Other .................. in a few of those questions giving people a chance to add info eg. what fuel do you use, the question doesn't cover all fuels.

              • I know we are all Prado drivers, but as the concerns relate to D4D motors, would the question be better if "What year is your D4D motor?"

                I have a pre-D4D Prado, but also drive a D4D Hilux with the "Death Rattle."

                I dont mind being advised to go to a Hilux forum to vote if the results are going to be based on data from concerned Prado drivers only.

                Just a suggestion :?:

                • Chippy,

                  I reckon it would good to put:

                  - Kms when you first heard the rattle
                  - Current kms

                  • I traded in a D4D Hilux on this new Prado. Didn't like the new model Hilux but thought the motor brilliant. The bloke who brought the Hilux from the dealer contacted me and to my surprise, asked how long it had had the death rattle in the motor. My reply "what rattle". I traded it at 45000 km and other than the normal rattle on cold starts had never noticed a thing. It is obvious some people have a real problem with a fair dinkum death rattle. However I agree with some of the comments that many could be concerned at what is normal noise with a diesel. I have even found myself listening closer now and waiting for it. I've had to give myself a boot up the backside. I'm fairly certain that if I get the serious rattle that some have reported e.g. Mav, then I will know it. If we become drama queens then we run the risk of having the reverse effect on Toyota and they take even less notice of complaints about the rattle because a large percentage are about normal noises. I think the survey could be a great tool. It allows us to put something on paper and get an idea of the depth of the problem. Then we should get on with the business of enjoying this wonderful vehicle. We are starting to see people waiting for delivery of a new vehicle getting anxious and that's not what life should be about. One of the reasons I got hooked on this site while waiting for my car was that it had that feel of people sharing a wonderful experience and even those who had had the vehicles for some time still had that excitement. That's brilliant. I didn't spend my hard earned to get worries. I'm not advocating putting my head up the proverbial, but let's get on with whatever we got the vehicle for. Me, I'm off for a month's travel next week. Only definite stop is Darwin for a brand spanker grandson born at 5am this morning. He can have a drive in Pa's new Prado and that will give him something to aspire to. Life's too short to spend all of it worrying.

                    • Obviously peoeple are getting worried over the normal diesel noise, can I just say that if your D4D has this problem it is not something you have to guess at whether it is or isn't the rattle. The noise is nothing like a normal diesel noise it is a very distinctive metallic rattling noise very much like when a baffle has come loose in a muffler. It will rattle very loudly under acceleration.

                      Now my D4D has been repaired there is no rattle under acceleration all I get is a normal diesel noise and with the windows wound up the engine is pretty quiet for a diesel.

                      • CJD: Amen to that brother. We need to be aware of the problem but not let it rule over us.

                        Chippy: Survey looking very good.

                        Where you put
                        20. Has Toyota replaced one or more injectors in your Prado ?

                        Maybe we should put next ---> If yes, did this fix your problem?
                        * Yes, It's all good now.
                        * A lot quieter, but I still hear a different noise when cold.
                        * A lot quiter, but I still hear the same noise when cold.
                        * Moderately better but the same noise is still there.
                        * I'm still driving a D9

                        Maybe too where you put.
                        18. Have you notified Toyota of any engine noise ?

                        Put next ---> Did Toyota give a response as to what caused the noise.
                        * Noisy fuel pump.
                        * Defective injectors.
                        * General engine warmup noises.
                        * Dead rats hitting bonnet.
                        * Other? Please state .

                        Can we put an "other" text field in the fuels used list?

                        Just to try and get some info on causes and fixes.

                        Only suggestions. What do you think?

                        • OK ... I've made those few changes.

                          Some of the changes require a fresh survey ... as there are already 12 respondents and having data in a field means the data has to be cleared before the format can be changed.

                          I'm just in the process of putting the data into an easilly viewed format.

                              • I have just done the survey, I am a little concerned with the engine noise in my D4D in the low rev range.

                                I didn't really take much notice of the thread until today.

                                I even mentioned it to my wife at around 25000 k's that the engine is starting to sound extremely rough in the low rev range and no longer has that diesel pur rather a diesel rattle. Also noticed cabin noise is getting louder.

                                We have our 30K service next week and I'll definately get them to look at this.

                                The Scanguage hasn't shown any degradation in fuel economy though over the last few months.

                                It's definately more noticable when the drivers window is down, that nice turbo whistle is replaced by a loose rattle that sounds like an untuned vehicle until the rev counter goes up.
