Not really what I wanted to hear, but I checked the manual and read that Toyota recommend a 10w-30w as the ideal oil for the D4D.2008 Silver Prado GXL D4D, Safety Pack 1, Tow Bar, Bull Bar, P&P Miccon Turbo Timer, Tekonsha P3 Electric Brake Controller

I cant really speak on behalf of the dealer, however I think as long as they are using an oil that is still within the acceptable range, (15w-40w is) there's no issue with it. It might pay for people to ask the question next time they book in for a service and find out for themselves what they are using.

Hey black sheep are you sure they didn't do more than an oil change on your Prado :? thats a big drop just by changing oils :shock:2004 Grande V6 4.0L, Sovereign bar,Tow Pack,Hard Spare Wheel Cover,Rear Spoiler,Reverse parking sensors,Headlight & Bonnet Protectors,Pacemaker Headers,Safari snorkel,Stebel Nautilus Compact Truck Horn, Vapour Sequential Gas Injection , IPF 900 xs,Dual Battery ,radiator protection plate,K&N Airfilter,King Springs,GME TX3440,Waeco CF-60AC Verb,Reverse camera

It certainly took care of the rattle in mine. We were getting some very frosty mornings here in Toowoomba for a few weeks and it made a big difference. No more rattles, and the engine loves it. To top it off, my average fuel consumption has dropped from mid 11's/100km to 9.6/ltr. Not bad hey.

It would be very interesting to see if other people have success in addressing the rattles just by changing their oils to what matches Toyota's specifications.

Hmmmm this is very interesting. I've just had a 15,000 k service done so the techs could check mine out. Told them about my rough starts and queried the noise I had for the first few minutes running on some mornings. They said all was ok of course and had no explanation for the rough starts I had a while back.
Funny thing though. Thought I was imagining it... but I could swear I've got a little more zip from the lights since the service. Seems smoother. I noticed it straight away. At first I thought.... nahhhhhh "placebo effect" you git!! But damn I'm sure of it now. Nothing huge but I'm sure there's a difference. I remember a comment made a while back about Toyota adding fuel additives at service times. Not listed on my report card thingy but I really wonder now. :? :?
Interesting too that a Toyota spare parts dept sold me some 20w50 for use with the D4D. Said that was what they used with their servicing. Hi all
Toyota got my baby for a 40,000km service this week. The prime reason was so that I could notify them of the "Dreaded D4D Death Rattle" which I, fortunately, don't have. At least this was noted on the service report in case of a future warranty issue. The service manager was very aware of this topic on this forum and made light of it. He personally drives a D4D with no problems but another staff member has the rattle for a few minutes only when the engine is cold.
It is understandable, and even professional, from their point of view to treat this issue as a minor one. He also seemed to be unaware of a Toyota ECU firmware reflash as mentioned elsewhere on this forum.
I can handle this information quite comfortably as my D4D runs like clockwork with excellent fuel economy and great caravan pulling power.

ECU reflash
Hi everyone,
I have been in cntact with Toyota again, and it sounds like I will be getting the ECU reflash and injector test very soon.
Although it is not the official toyota fix, I am willing to have a go at anything to make this noise go away.
I will let you all know how it goes as soon as its done.
Hopefully it fixes the problem as I have a little bit of slush money burning a hole in my pocket and ARB is only 3km away.Babs

ECU reflash
Hi, Only A Hammer
From the talking I have had to do with Toyota, the reflash is only being used on vehicles with a problem. I am only getting it done thanks to a little bit more info from MAV. Very much appreciated MAV 8) 8) 8)
Just get your truck and enjoy it , and if you are still nervous about the rattle, buy the Toyota extended warranty when you pick it up. That will give you 5-6 years of driving without the out of pocket $$$$$ should something go wrong.
Hopefully mine is fixed soon so I can get some shares in ARBBabs

Hi all
Dropped the Prado off at dealer tonight and will be back there tommorow morning for the check on my rattle while car is cold...
Is there any specific questions / information I should ask / raise?? Any specific tests, measure, reports I should ensure they do?? Any details appreciated!
Interestingly, they had a Hilux with a rattle - they said they ended up solving it by replacing all the engine mounts (i know its sounds strange )
Cheers

The previous post from gxl_d4d will most likely be deleted as Toyota do not appreciate their service bulletins being made public. However it now makes me understand why it took 2 days to test my engine considering this document is 80 pages long.
It is a very thorough testing routine and it certainly has benefited my engine by enabling the source of the problem to be located and repaired.
It may be an older document but the D4D has been in Europe for a few years. This is the testing sequence that was performed on my engine so it would seem to be a current document for this problem.Roll on the 2010 Pradopoint GTG
