So now iam getting the reflash ; then 1000km of driving ; then check all the injectors & replace any that are faulty.I think this is the stage most of us are at. I was told that the ECU is the problem it is not sensing the cold start there for pumping to much diesel into the chamber which causes the pinging or rattle we hear, this is dirtying the injectors. The idea behind the 1000km of driving is to clean them? This is what i was told today . My rattle is only there at a cold start not at normal operating temp unlike some you, so hopefully the refash will do the trick. They also said they are only getting in touch with the people who have complained so i dout if there is going to be a recall on all d4ds. I will keep you all posted, Russell.
Interesting info there Rusty. When I spoke to my dealer they said they had sent the data off to toyota and not a week later they said they will replace No.2 injector and "we'll see how that goes" to fix the problem. There was no mention of a reflash in my case. My rattle got progressively worse to a point where now I can hear it when up to temp. Maybe there are a few different issues at play here. 1 - Being a programming issue and 2 - an injector issue or 3 - maybe both?

With the weather warming up here in Cairns (Cold start a balmy 24-25 degrees this morning) I have noticed it's not as pronounced on cold start but is still there none the less. But when up to temp it is louder than ever.

      Cheers,

Well PradoPointers, I am able to add another scenario regarding what is causing the "clatter", mainly when cold.
When I dropped my vehicle off at the dealer this morning to have a SECOND set of engine mounts replaced under warranty, I spoke to the ser vice manager re the cold clatter and he advises it is caused by uneven action of injector cleaner!!! Apparently, different brands of diesel have different levels of a cleaner additive and depending on this, the injectors do not get cleaned evenly and level a mior carbon residue, hardly even distinguishable when removing and looking at the injecor at fault. I guess this could explain different injectors being responsible, as reported by previous posts? In any event, the service manager told me that it will go away after a while and not be a problem (after enough fuel has been forced through to remove the residue). This is indeed the case with my vehicle, I had a run of it and it has now gone. At least I hope this is the case, the dealer is happy to see and assess the vehicle should it happen again.
He also indicated from his experience, there is one brand of fuel common to the majority of cases he has encountered. Gary

      • Thanks for the info gary. If the dirty injector is the cause you would think they'd run some injector cleaner through to fix the problem.

Mine has been happening for around 6000kms now with no signs of going away, infact I rekon it gets louder by the day... Anyway should be back to 100% Monday hopefully!

        • I love the way all these dealers have a different take on what is causing the problem. There was no way my injector was going to fix itself and only replacing it cured the problem.

          • Got mine back yesterday from the dealer. Was told that they will send the report off to toyota and toyota will send them a new ECU and a set on injectors once a kit becomes available.

They recon they are waiting on 8 kits before mine, mainly for hilux's but some prado's as well.

              • Hi all,

So our Prado is in today ... Engine mount replacement and ECU Flash/Injector check.

                So update so far:-
                1. The pre- ecu flash injector check
                i1 : -1.1
                i2 : 3.2
                i3 : -2.5
                i4 : 0.4

Outcome: Toyota (not just dealer) recommending 4 new injectors required. And this must be done prior to the ECU reflash now.

They noted that there are now revised injectors ie "new design ones" but availability is an issue (possible end yr availbility, although this may improve)

A note was also made that ALL additional accessories added to car need to be disabled/disconnected prior to ECU re-flash - anyone else heard that? (I have indicated that is toyota responsibility to do!!!)

                So saga continues for longer!

                Cheers

                • Borgy what's the go with the engine mount issue? Is it rattly under load?

I'm trying to find another bad rattle I've got which appears under load in most gears include LR.

Good to hear that toyota is looking after you. I haven't heard anything about a reflash from my dealer. Either they're deliberately not telling me anything or they don't know. I can't even get the injector feedback figures off them!

                  cheers,

Push for them that way there is a clear record of what was found and their recommended action.

Lets hope this get consistently addressed in a more widespread fashion!

I have the car back but they are doing a warranty claim now on injector number 3 this time. The process is they get the data, send it off to Toyota. Toyota looks at the data, decides on the warranty claim and sends out a new injector if the injector is out of tolerance.
Got the call today, they are replacing another 2 injectors (and the seals and the injector lines). Hopefully it goes well and the "pride and joy" can become fun to drive again.

The car goes in on Monday.

                            • Nah mate, pretty much off idle up to around 1500-2000rpm. 1st and second gear mainly, but 3rd as well if I'm being lazy with the gear changes.

                              Oh and in LR also.

He said, as well as the injector replacement, he performed a ECU reflash with modified parameters that now have a self clean functionality included. He wouldn't go any further on how and when this functions works though. Anyway, running like a dream, so far!
