  • Awesome! I have the death rattle. Just got a call from Toyota after my prado had a sleep over and they did the cold scan...... Bad news. $3650 to fix, it outside of 3 yrs but under 100,000klms.

Where do I go from here?

Reading this entire thread there are people who have made enough noise for Toyota to come to the party, can I please get some advice, specifically from anyone in brisbane on how you managed it?

This is basically going to force us to sell it. Only owned it for a month or so, it was supposed to be our around Australia vehicle, 'nothing like a bullet proof Toyota'

    :-(

    • Myminirocks,
If you bought it only in the last month or so, hopefully from a dealer, then you may be able to claim on the statutory 3 month warranty?
If bought privately, then that's another story.
Hope it works out for you.

      • private...... :-( I actually bought it from the authorised toyota service dealer in central queensland.... kinda figured it would have been well maintained and thought this would have been a way to try and eliminate the risk of buying one with this rattle issue, oh well....

Just got of the phone with the service manager, he said he will ref lash and upgrade the software in the ECU, and then look at it in 2000klm's time. The ECU reflash and scan has cost me $130. Geez I hope it fixes it, but, I'm not holding my breath.

        how disappointing....

        • Picked up the Prado, 20mtrs down the road, rattled like crazy. They tell me the ECU upgrade will take 1000-2000klms to fix the problem?? The results of the injector scan, #1: 1.4, #2: -1.1, #3: -0.7, #4: -0.2

geez I hope this ecu upgrade fixes the problem!

          • Whe you park it nose down for a while, do you get white smoke at startup?

            • Interesting.... I think I know where you're heading with this, leaking injectors?

I'll try that tonight, park over night nose down and test in the morning...

On a different note, $3600 from Toyota, is there any advantage on doing it thru them, and if not, does anyone have a recommendation for somewhere else in Brisbane north (preferably) to take it to?

              • I had a work mate recently take his d4d hilux into Toyota due to his injectors, after them quoting him a stupid amount to fix it he decided to go the eBay route, he paid 450 ish for 4 new injectors and did the fitting himself, he said it fixed his issue straight away. I know Toyota are meant to replace all the pipes etc when they do a replacent of your injectors, (well they did with mine) but mine was a warranty claim. This might be another cheaper option for people to look at.

                Cheers

                • MMR pm the Roo. He will know who you can contact. Sticking with Toyota will get you the standard Toyota parts warranty but I reckon you will get that from any place as well. Toyota aren't looking after you so look after yourself.

                  • OK So I parked it nose down over night. I wouldn't say there was excessive white smoke when I started it, there was smoke, but there was so little that it was very hard to tell if it was white or blue, in fact it would be hard to even say it was white at all.

Roo, thank you for the referral, I'll give this ECU flash the 1000klms they require and I'll pursue with Toyota, I'm not confident though, so when I finish flogging that dead horse, I'll give them a call.

                      • I have just joined pradopoint.com and new to the forums,

I have been reading this thread and have become paranoid about the "Death Rattle" as I have just recently purchased 08 Prado 120 Standard with 90k on it. Extremely happy with this vehicle and wondered why I never got one years ago, anyway! Being a diesel there is a rattle (the noise an engine makes when the tappets are loose) to me it sounds like every other diesel, my bosses D-Max, can hear my neighbour pull up in his diesel ford.
So anyway parked in the drive nose downward and will check for smoke in the morning. Even though I got the 3yr 90k warranty I would still prefer to have not purchased a lemon and don't want this hassle.

Will post if there is smoke or not

                        • Injector seal leak=Oil Pickup block=engine failure D4D: Re diesel rattle in D$D Prado

New to Forum and noticed first up, issue with leaking injectors. This Toyota Campaign link will be of critical interest, I picked up details of this from another forum, Seams injector leak can lead to screen clogging & failure...scary!!:

                          http://www.toyota-tech.eu/tomscabs.aspx

Reading many posts regarding D4D Injector Seal Washer leaks, Leading to Combustion leakage into Lubrication system, Oil Contamination, Oil Pickup Strainer blockage, Engine Oil starvation and ultimate engine failure, this one covers our VINS lso and covers common issues with our own Hilux vehicles

Many D4D owners downunder should be aware that Toyota NZ recommends Injector seals & o-rings be replaced at 45,000 KLM intervals, many similar issues have been reported in NZ also.

Looks like MR T is doing the right thing OS with its customers in dealing with this and related problems on Hilux & Prado elsewhere

Look forward to a similar response with loyal customers in Australia & New Zealand.

                          Hope this info helps

                          • Started the prado in the morning didn't notice any smoke, Drove the kids to school and noticed engine was not as loud when hot compared to when it is cold.
Gut feeling is telling me I have the rattle,

Not sure what the agenda will be, phone the car yard where I bought the vehicle to make sure whether or not I can use my own mechanic without voiding the warranty, Don't want to travel an hour for a service.

Have mechanic look at it and voice my concern over injectors, and then see what happens, or just pop in to Toyota and see what happens

Pretty sure you DO NOT have the rattle, all diesels sounds noisier in the morning/when cold and quiet down as you go. The rattle mentioned in this thread (never heard it myself but it's been described here before) sounds like two robots making a baby.

                              • Well I have the rattle, had it for a couplpe of months now. All the classic symptoms, knocking when cold, slugish to start, blowing white smoke anytime it was parked facing downhill, etc. After harrassing a couple of different stealerships and getting nowhere I have bitten the bullet and I'm getting my prado fixed by O'Briens 4WD Geraldton. Not entirly sure how much it will cost but they are getting me 4 Brand New injectors @$450 each plus I'm getting them to do the glowplugs, take a look at the intake manifold, 200k service, and replace the earth wire that blew itself to pieces when toyota wired up my winch the wrong way! My best guess is about $4-5000. I will let you know the actual cost this weekend.
