    • Hello
Brand new to this forum (or any internet forum). I've just bought (private) a 2007 D4D Prado with just 60K on the clock. I have all of the problems related to the injectors. I.e. It rattles badly when cold, idles poorly and I looked up the sump plug on the last oil change to find black deposits starting to build up on the strainer.
Took it to Toyota, Mandurah. They said I need all 4 injectors reconditioning. Two were out of spec but they might be compensating for the the other two that may be faulty. Also, I need new injector seals fitted because I have the seals that are prone to leaking (which I think they are because of the black deposits I found).
I just have a couple of questions if you can help:
My old man is diesel mechanic and he said to fit new injectors if I could afford the extra expense.
Does anyone know if there is a make / model of D4D injector that isn't prone to the known D4D injector problems?
I.e. did Toyota ever fix these injector problems?
Has anyone had their injectors replaced by a diesel mechanic - not Toyota? Is it possible because it's pretty much guaranteed that it will be cheaper than the price quoted by Toyota.
      Nick.

      • You could certainly find answers to your questions by googling this forum; however, off the top of my head, the issue is not with the injectors themselves, but with the copper washers. It seems evident that your car has the defective washers - the dealership needs to remove the injectors, clean the ports (perhaps clean the injectors), reinstall them with the new washers, clean the sump pump screen, then you should be good to go. Here in Europe, they had a recall on certain Prados between 2004-2007 in order to take care of these issues - not sure if this extends to Australia. One thing - don't drive that car with the symptoms you've seen - the #1 cylinder will be starved of oil and you could blow the whole thing at any time.

And here's a link to the pdf directly from Toyota about what Toyota will do to cure the problem:

          • Had our Prado checked out this morning and yes, one injector is stuffed. Cost for Bridge Toyota to replace it, $1970!
They are submitting an out of warranty claim to Toyota for us so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully find out by the end of the week.

            • Whitey, my undestanding from reading about injector issues is that you must change all 4. The reasons are covered off somewhere within this thread and elswhere on the froum

              • It's my turn !!!!!

Well, true to form, the odometer clicked over the magic 100,000km and the knock knock knock starts!!!

Off to the nearest dealer.....first we will do a test $40.00 and remap the ecu. Then, if the knocking persists it will be reconditioned Denso Injectors, new rails and seals all up $3000 !

Mnnnn...next nearest dealer number two.....first we will do a test $120 and remap the ecu. Then, if the knocking persists it will be new Toyota injectors, new rails, new injector pump all up $11,100 !!!!!

                Bugger me !!!!!

Car is Dec 96 build, I bought it with 70,000k no problems since then. Serviced every 10,000 by local mechanic in his general workshop.

Can someone confirm a few things for me please to help me determine what best to do:

                1. Is it really worth trying to get some $$$ out of Toyota or not worth the grief ????

                2. Is dealing with a diesel specialist workshop (rather than the dealers) a better option???

                3. Are "reconditioned" Denso injectors OK or should I insist (and pay more) for new.????

                4. Any personal recommendations of diesel specialist workshops in Melbourne or environs??

                All advice appreciated...

                      • OK, a bit to far away for me to help out but if I were you i would do the following:

Buy yourself 4 new injectors from a reputable supplier. They are readily available for $510.0 +tax each.
Get a good mechanic to fit them and program them to suit your pump.

Your pump does not need replacing (based on the description you have given)
You fuel rail does not need replacing.
Cost to install the new injectors with a seal and washer kit supplied should be between $600 and $800.
I would get the mechanic to clean out your throttle body while he/she is at it.

                        Job done.

Don't bother with all of the BS that you will have to go through with TMC. It just isn't woth it.

                        • When this happened to mine (about 10000km ago) i went through all the hoops with TMC and got nowhere. So I went through my local diesel mech. I had the injector replaced with brand new ones, new seals/seats, cleaned the throtle body and manifold, checked the pump screen (clear), new diff oils, auto trans fluid, radiator flush, and a full geasing while they had it. total cost $3800 and two days.

                          Injectors were $450 + tax
                          seal/seats were $11.50 + tax

                          • Thanks.. Do you know what injector part number for my Prado ?

                            .

Great advice, and a path I would prefer. Get some new denso injectors and have them fitted by local garage. A few things if you could help me out with a bit of knowledge....

                            1. What part number would the injectors be for my Prado. ? 12/06 mfctr, VIN JTEBZ29J400125648. (1KD)

                            2. Would the local (non tmc) repairer have access to program after installation or would I need to go to the dealer?

                            3. Are all denso injectors the same, or are their different qualities, i.e dealer v eBay or online supplier?

                            4. Are "genuine Toyota" injectors denso? Dealer suggests they are TMC part...doesn't sound right to me.

                            Many thanks

                            • If replacing all 4 then the last generation of the "upgraded" injectors are the ones you want.
Denso is a Toyota company so tmc part and Denso are the same thing.
eBay can be problematic. Plenty of bogus injectors out there. Some Chinese copies even come in a bogus denso box
                              For extra trickery value.
Any decent mechanic should be able to fit and code them as long as they have the correct equipment.
I would go with someone that has done the work before.

                              • As Davros said Denso are Toyota's vendor. Just get genuine Denso injectors and save money. Steer clear of eBay on something as important as this, last thing you want to do is revisit this issue in a few weeks/months. By the way Nippon Denso translates to 'Made in Japan'.
