What's funny is I don't drive like a hoon, I let the car roll with acceleration rather than floor the crap out of it. In breaking down the odd 10,000kms it's done: 70% freeway, 20% around town and 10% offroad. Only driven in mud on one trip, which was given a spray-down at the local town before the drive home, and again a proper spray around the wheels/suspension and underbody at home. If anything, this car should still be in mint condition. Let's hope the sound was my imagination!! I'll be starting it up with a cold engine tomorrow and see if it's still there...

Just an update, started the 150 up today while the engine was cold and drove off. No loose rattling noises! Let's hope it doesn't return....

Gents,

Can anyoune reccomend a Dealer in Perth who had experience with replacement of injectors out of warranty?, i have noticed mine is becoming increasingly noiser and is just out of the Man Warranty (NOV 2007 model).

Much appreciated of any info

Thanks for the tips ##########. No weird noises since then... and I haven't done anything different to make it stop...

I've been to my local Toyota service dept too often, the vibe there isn't welcoming anymore lol. I CBF going back anyway, especially when the problem seems to have disappeared.

That's unsatisfactory they make you feel that way William, go to another Toyota dealer if you can. You know, Toyota service centres across Australia know about these problems, widely known.

Funny that you say that as the manager at the dealer (who we've got a good relationship with) denies any problem with the D4D's injectors. We were out in the parking lot and he simply pointed to his 150D4D and said "see, I drive one and haven't had any problems with it"...

If I do take it in to Toyota to have it checked out, would it be under warranty or would I have to pay for them to check it out? Would the error log you speak of be there? How long untill the log is erased (if even does erase)?

It's not even 6mths old and has just hit the 10,000km mark. I wouldn't be surprised if they laughed and sent me away - especially since the problem isn't evident and assuming there is no error log recorded.

Hello All, update on my injector problem, ran the tank out till the low fuel light came on, filled up at same BP Servo & after about 400 kys noise has gone even on cold start. The Prado was booked in on 17 March & left at Toyota over night , they ran tests & could not find any faults which I suspected as it had not rattled with the new load of fuel, some fuel was drained & was found to be ok, the only thing I had done was disconnect the battery , about a couple of days before I took on new fuel, does this wipe all fault codes ,down to about half a tank on 2nd tank still no noise, thinking maybe bad fuel was problem , always used same BP for last 6months have not been on any big trips, thanking you Cutfinger.

William, if you feel that you have a problem you are quite within your rights to have it checked by any Toyota dealership of your choice. There should be no charge for this as the issue (injector problem) is widely known. Just because a manager, owner or whatever is driving a 150 series, this does not mean a thing.
Cutfinger, if you disconnect your battery this will wipe all the codes, including any fault codes, and take the settings back to the factory settings on the ECU. When in town, I try to use the same garage to buy my diesel from, so if there is a problem I know where I bought the fuel and can approach them about the problem.

A bit off topic, but if what you say is correct, would that mean you could disconnect the battery prior to making a warranty claim if you had a performance chip installed?

On trip to Tassie towing van started to hear a rattle and took it to Toyota Hobart who did a reflash and suggested I check again on my return home.

No change and dropped it down yesterday to local dealer for cold start this morning.
Upshot is a knock in 2 injectors.
dealer will lodge "out of warranty" claim with Toyota, as vehcle is now 9 months outside factory warranty.
Lets hope Toyota come to the party/

pedro let me know what happens with yours. Im in the same boat. Dealer is lodging an out of warranty claim. The quote to get it fixed was a rough estimate of $5k. Im not paying that i can tell you. If Toyota dont come to the party im going throught the ACCC. I will also be making enquiries with a lawyer as this is definitely something that some one needs to make the general public know about. Maybe a class action may be in order.

Well. My 120 was made right in the 'Hot Zone' of this problem occurring. Sept 07 Build. Always used BP Ultimate, except when it went off the shelf for that period of time here in WA. I did have a few mornings where the engine had a noise, but I now think this is the infamous D4D 'Cold Start' issue rather than anything to do with the injectors. I have not developed the rattle to date. Long story, but have also not even done 40 thou with the 120. Got no explanation. It could have something to do with the fuel. Might just be lucky too - but that would be first!

Mine has now done close to 90k and has not shown any signs of the rattle yet. Always fill up at shell except when it is unavailable, and always the same servo when in town. It is a June 07 build.

Seems to be no end in sight for this problem. Hope it doesn't happen to my 150 series. I'm sure it will in time have this problem and it might be time to sell it.

It's been a couple weeks already and still no sign of cold start rattling in my 150... I must have been imagining things ops: My odo reads 11,111kms - cool huh? :lol:
