Both Dealers "claim" that there is nothing that can be done. Toyota Australia wont offer anything as the car is out of warranty.... Bloody disappointed ...

Funny that 3/4 injectors are buggered but toyota dont want anything to know about it ....

Any tips or suggestions as to places to start to get toyota to stand up and maybe meet me 1/2 way in the cost of the injectors ....

Im in exactly the same situation as you are. Unfortunately the only course of action for us is to lawyers. There are public lawyers that will help, but still cost about $500. Perhaps it would be worth while getting a list together of names and information and attack it as a class action? let me know what you go with.

      • Whatever happened to the spreadsheet Chippy or Mav (?) made with build nos and when the rattle started etc? Mine is getting the 90k service tomorrow so I am going to ask if the data (part #s and dates) from toyodiy (post #1016) are correct for Oz. Maybe those who have had injectors replaced can identify which part # they had or post build dates to see if there is any correlation. That data may support out of warranty claims if all the same injector are faulty...

        • Ya know, there is a lot to be said about the awesome effect that forums like Prado point for example, can have on their decision as to do the right thing or not.
As far as I am concerned, it's not fair wear and tear as they call it, put it to them, I certainly would, you didn't buy the car from China!!
In my 50 plus years of being around motors, some as big as houses and some with pistons the size of a 5 cent coin, I can not understand the the stupidity of poking exhaust gas, along with blow by gas back into the inlet. look at the previous posts, do you really think that the modern day engine should be so full of crap? Buying a new vehicle should be an investment, not a burden.
Toyota owners should make themselves heard, instead of taking it up the rs.
          Major rant over.

          • Ferret. This is exactly what i did. They still came back saying its out of warranty and they wont help. I said that under their warranty claim system that parts are replaced if they are faulty due only to manufacturer error, NOT normal wear and tear. SO if this is the case how can one set of injectors with the same problem be replaced under warranty and one set not replaced out of warranty. Statutary warranty still applies even before the new legislation, this is a clear case of this. However, because toyota is a BIG company, and we are only small they can pretty much do whatever they like. It will cost us (INDIVIDUALLY) too much to fight them over it. They will fight it with everything they have, because if they set a precident that one out of warranty claim is upheld they will have to replace every injector, which will cost heaps.

I fear unless we can get a large enough group together, this will be swept under the rug and the small customers made to fit the bill or a toyota mistake.

            • Hi Mcfisherclan, Statutary warranty is a huge lever, and no matter how big the company, they all have to abide by the rules.
If a product fails before it's expected life with normal wear and tear, the manufacturer or importer is responsible as far as I am led to believe.

              • My trucks an 07 D4D. Bought second hand with 86000km on it (timed out of warranty). It started the cold rattle with about 94000km on it. (The day after I read this forum topic coincidentally) I now have 115k on it and it is still puzzling me. I've been running it on BP Diesel as suggested on this site. I've run LiquiMolly Diesel knock through it. But it is still an inconsistent issue. Doesn't seem to be related to temp, as some mornings it does it at 17c but then not at 12c air temp. I'm not sure if it could be humidity related. My question is, if the injectors are faulty, why does it run so well when warm? Could it be condensation in the fuel lines, manifold or something? I'd be happy to join a list of plaintiffs if one gets started. I'm also going to ring a few Toyota dealers to discuss and I'll provide feedback here. So far I have been just living with it.

                • After the 90k service I checked on the different part numbers that toyodiy lists for the D4D injectors. These are 23670-39185 (up to 09/07), 23670-39186 (10/07 and 11/07) and 23670-39316 (12/07 on). This information is correct but what I didn't realise is that the build date for the car is not necessarily the one listed on the compliance plate and the actual build date can be months earlier. Mine for example is 11/07 build not 12/07 as stated on the plate (1/08 compliance) so my D4D has the 23670-39186 injectors fitted. The latest parts listing shows the last number as the replacement injector for all years / engines and the other two numbers are superseded. As for the 150 it is a different part number again and has not been changed since the 150 was released.

What does this mean? No idea to be honest. 120s are not being retrofitted with 150 injectors if they have a problem but this could be simply a change in the 150 to suit a different ECU rather than wholesale change to the injector design/manufacture.

It would be nice to find out if all three injectors have had problems or only the first or first and second. I will keep digging and try to work out why Toyota ran with an injector for 2 months. That seems odd even if it was interim supply while changing designs.

                  • Where can u find the details on the statutory warranty for the injectors?

Sure they are suppose to last longer than 100000km?

Does anyone know when they are "called" to be changed in the service schedule?

                    • Hi Guys

I've been offline since late last year and when I came on again I ran into password issues that caused me to re-register. I was Ian Rogers now IanLR. I say all of this if my previous posting on this issue are relevant in any way to what I have to say now.

At the 110,000 service I mentioned yet again without any empasis or hope that the diesel rattle was there again. It wasn't any worse than last winter and I didn't expect anything other than the usual "all diesels rattle", "couldn't find anything wrong", "injectors are in spec" etc. Anyhow I was most surprised when told that some of my injectors were now out of spec and that the issue had been referred to Toyota. I drove away thinking nothing will come of this as it is out of warranty.

To my amazement the dealer rang me about 2 weeks later and said Toyota would replace all injectors under warranty. And they did at no cost at all and it works beautifully. The other morning I had ice on the wind screen when I started it and there wasn't a hint of rattle. A bit early yet to see what impact it may have on fuel consumption. One happy camper now.

                      • Hi again

A little more info that may be relevant.

Toyota advised on the service invoice "2 injectors have feedback values outside of threshold"

Model number is KDJ120R-GKAGYQ production date 1/6/07 and km at service was 111372. Engine number 1KD1682025.

Service invoice for injector replacement does not identify part numbers and just says "internal fault in fuel injector replace all fuel injectors under warranty as per Toyota instructions"

They replaced 4 pipe sub-assy, 4 seal nozzle holder and 4 injectors.

                        Ian

                        • Which injectors did they put back in the 150 roo? The replacement 120 injector and the standard 150 injector are different part numbers. Be interesting to see if they replaced like for like on your car because that is no guarantee of longevity since you have already had a failure. How many 150's have had injector replacements? As far as I can work out trolling through the net the biggest problem has been with the original 120 injector. Can find no evidence of the second or third having problems that is not to say they aren't failing just that there doesn't seem to be any data for post Nov 07 build 120s having injector problems. I spoke with my Toyo service guy and he didn't know what the difference was between the early and later injectors and he believes that there have been no failures with the replacement 120 injectors. It would be nice to know what the differences are and whether this is correct.

                          • I've just picked up my 2007 TD VX from Toyota service after an overnight stay for a cold start injector check, and have been informed No. 2 injector is out of spec and required replacing. I've been both half expecting and dreading this day since this D4D rattle thread started! Of course the vehicle is approx 6 months out of warranty but has only done 30,000km and has always been serviced by Toyota. The front desk service guy was pretty dismisive and wouldn't aknowledge that it was a well known Toyota faullt. He said he would submit a form requesting an out of warranty repair but didn't sound hopeful. On another note I only got 2km down the road before I had to return to the service centre due to a new and different rattle from under the bonnet. It turns out the fuse board cover was on backwards and they had failed to reattach a clip on the airbox.

I thought this vehicle would last me 10 years +, but now I'm not so sure, especially at $1800 per injector. Has anyone in WA managed to have injectors replaced on an out of warranty vehicle? Have you found some service centres more willing to discuss than others?

                            Thanks SC

                            • Sarc,I don't live in WA.
However, read my post on this thread (No 1014) and on this thread http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ACED-BY-TOYOTA.
                              Part of this states

Got in touch with Office of Fair Trading and they suggested I approach the dealership from whom I had purchased vehicle.

Did ths and they then did a cold start, sent report to Toyota and 1 week later Toyota had agreed to 50% of claim for "out of warranty" for parts and nil for labour.
Dealer then contacted Swan and they agreed to pick up the balance, so I will not be out of pocket for replacement.

Thanks to all who have given advice and comment on my problem.

Don't know what the local dealer did which resulted in gaining approval for replacement of only 1 injector (and it was to be an old style one at that) but whatever it was it shows there are dealers and then there are dealers.

I too was told by one dealer that 1 injector was faulty and Toyota would replace one injector.

Diesel experts told me that all 4 need to be replaced if only 1 is faulty, and that the only ones to use are DLC type .
Apparently the old ones are non DLC .

I think legislation called "Implied Warranty " may be your friend in this situation.
Perhaps the involvement of dealer from whom I bought the vehicle with Toyota helped and I would suggest you take this course of action.
