  • How to pick a lemon D4D motor

    Hello boys,
Been posting before about upgrading my 06 1KZ 4 speed auto with cooler ,has 210 ks on now I think it runs fine 12.2 lts per 100 ks just less than 18 with the van on,all up about 2250 kgs there abouts got a 3 inch exhaust and that's all, always reading PP some very clever and most of all experienced blokes here ,
haven't done the injectors or glow plugs yet but reading Anths comments about glow plungs I must make a move soon,
As most of you know the 1KZ is a bit weak on the hills towing , so thinking of Injectors and glow plugs and a chip , turbo shop not far from me in Balcatta in Perth very clued up on turbos and dyno tuning , GTURBO
. made some recommendations for a DTE MODULE and dyno to tune , most of it went over my head , plug into this ,plug into them ,boost will go to 18 etc. but he has a good reputation I read, and could do different stages of tune with intercoolers , and different turbos etc ,but for what I wanted the module and dyno was fine without compromising my motor and fuel economy to much.

He did say that when my head cracks,(not if,) he has good heads for the 1KZ, so like the D4D with injectors, the 1KZ has head problems ???

Then Ozbush comes along with a manual mapper gizmo and has me watching his progress, the mapper or a chip ,another clued up PPer I respect , very informed.

If I go the other way and look for a used D4D that will cost me more $$$ and don't know if I'm buying a lemon,we've all heard about Injector tales I know percentage wise it's sod all for the amount of good vehicles out there but how do you pick a good motor, are they running ok before problems and just fail at any time or can you pick a dodgy one , I know there are people like #### who deal with them on a daily basis and might be able to pick a dodgy, but don't think I could , petrol is a bit different to me you can usually hear something not quite right but diesels all sound Noisy to me , big endy if it was petrol , imo.

Sooo , keep the devil I know and really like and do Injectors glow plugs chip dyno tune for about $ 3k Ish ,clean out my possible crap from inlet system , could probably do that myself with references from PP,
Or look for a later vehicle with hopefully a better engine ,
I must say I'm not a rev head just the towing the van that lets my 1kz down on the hills, normally travel at 90 ish with the van in tow,
    Thanks for reading.
    Cheers Alan.

G'day Alan. I'm no expert on picking lemons but I did do some research before I bought my 06 D4D. I too had a 05 1KZ chipped and a 3 inch exhaust but have made the switch to the newer motor and gear box.
I've found that if you pick an 09 or onwards there should be no real issues with injectors and I also checked that when buying mine from a reputable Toyota dealership, they had a full service history and the recalls were up to date, and the injectors had been replaced with the ones that don't have the copper seats.
Don't buy anything that blows smoke or rattles when accelerating when cold and when you find a good one, Some preventative additions like a catch can and you should be sweet.
Don't get discouraged by everything you read on the old Internet as they don't all blow up as soon as look at them like people may think and if you ready every horror story on the forums then you'll never buy anything

For what it's worth, the newer motor is so much more refined than the older one, and even though I felt secure in knowing the were no injector issues with the old 1KZ, I was always concerned about the lack of power and fuel consumption, plus the forums read head issues,
The newer D4D is miles ahead in terms of power, torque, economy, gear box and lock up torque converter in 4th and 5 th gear for towing..
I have a camper and its unreal for towing... Doesn't hunt gears when pulling up hills or long, steady gradients.....you can even overtake other vehicles whilst towing, a luxury I never had in the 1KZ.......You really won't look back.

                Thanks for that Nigelh
I was leaning towards doing up the devil I know , haven't really looked at any d4ds but might start to have a look at a few and check there service history , I know of cause they don't all have injector problems but never heard mention about looking at 09 + .
But couldn't go much later , have you still got your 06 at the moment or upgraded ,
Had to laugh at the two previous replys sounds like there sitting on eggshells waiting for them to break, don't want to be driving like that.
Thanks again for your balanced reply.
                Cheers Alan.

Make sure you start it cold and check for white smoke or rattle on startup. If you can't start it cold or they won't let you, walk away. It disappears once the engine is warm. If you are really worried take a Techstream with you and check the injector values, but that's probably overkill.

The old copper seals should have been replaced by the 08 builds. There is a recall on the earlier models to have them done so check it is part of that recall, or if it has been done. You can do this via the VIN number.

Injectors probably should be replaced every 120km. So for anything with over 100km factor on new injectors soon. Anything over 120k, get them done, and again at the same intervals.

(I bought my D4D with full knowledge of the potential issues. I am very happy with it so far after 45,000km

There is a thread started by #### in the 120 diesel section from memory. That lists all you should check. I believe there is a link in ####'s signature as well. Otherwise the 120 and 150 diesel threads have what you seek.

Yep still got my 06 D4D. Just got back from a weekend away and have done 4 trips this last month as I've have a lazy November. Performs flawlessly every time. Really. And that's with long trips, camper towing and long sand/ beach runs. Cant praise the Prado enough. Really no need to be paranoid unless you go for a cheap one that's been abused. Toyota really are quality unit. Cheers Nigel

That's what I thought right up until mine went bang. Certainly wasn't abused and was serviced religiously. Unless you are checking the injector values and other associated issues you will never know until it lets go. Toyota don't check during their servicing and that's a fact.
