  • Scan gauge coolant temps

    Hi,
Just fitted a scan gauge to the prado and was wondering what coolant temps was the norm. Mines a 1kd manual and generally runs around 88-95 degrees but can get up to 100c when working (towing up hill etc). Is this bit high? outside temp not that hot either, around 18c.
    Cheers

Mine runs at 88-91 99% of the time, it has gone to 96 when towing up long steep hills, I start to adjust my driving once it gets to 94 as high temps kills engines.

    Cheers Andrew

Mine normally is about 85-88 but when I checked yesterdays 'trip' it hit 92 at some time. Went for a 145 kms drive around Canberra wineries.

Doesn't cost much to put another tube of silicon oil into the fan hub, there are a few tutorials on the web showing how to do it. I doubt that the cheap replacement hubs you see for sale would be as durable.
              cheers

                X 2.

Even towing in places where the ambient temperature is close to 50 degrees it has never gone over 91/92. If it does, I just ensure it's out of D (drive) and in 4 and within seconds the temp will fall back to the mid - high eighties.

That would explain why every time we encountered a hill on the GTG I would leave you behind. Naughty me.

The trans temp is also correlated with how much the right foot is buried too.

You might like to check if your (electric) thermo fan is working!

                        Yeah that's a bit warm.
What speed does it get hot?
If low speeds it may be the fan.
If highway speeds there's plenty of air flow at speed so likely radiator not doing the job? Was it a quality radiator?
Could be thermostat, but don't really see that with these.

                        If everything is working normally:
                        Idle temp 83
                        Normal operation 83-90
                        Commonly 85-88
90+ is warmer than normal so you should adjust driving & plan cooling system improvements.

                          Hi ####,
It seems to do it at all speeds, but highway speeds and especially up hills its worse, seems to run at low to mid 90's then high 90's to 100 odd on a hill (not towing). Makes no difference with outside temp either, was 6 degrees when i left this morning, 33 at times today and ran same temps!!!!, i thought thermostat or temp sender? Not sure about radiator, was replaced along with water pump and hoses etc when engine was rebuilt due to cracked pistons around 70k ago.
                          Cheers

Right, so highway speed & hills these engines do make heat fast. But it definitely seems too much.
The fact you say it doesn't make a diff with outside temp is leading me to believe you may have a restriction, maybe thermostat or rad.
From here is difficult but perhaps change the thermostat & that is then renewed & confirmed or ruled out. Go genuine for that & you will need the seal. What about externals of air con condenser & radiator? Mud in cores?

Radiator is clean, I've ordered a tridon thermostat 80 degree one, but will get genuine instead if you think they are better. Hosed air con condenser and rad out last night, but they were clean
