    Hi Gang,

    I'm sure this question has been asked many times so please excuse me for adding the the pile..

    I have a 120 series Diesel.. love it but I think it's low on power - especially at 100Km/hr etc.. to pass another car etc I really need to time it well and build up to speed etc. It's a diesel I know.. not expecting rocket like performance but.. and trying to fight the urge to trade in on a Ford Ranger ..! love my Prado and want to keep it so just wondering what can be done.

    so the big question is .. if I were to do only one thing - Chip it or Do a 3" exhaust.. which would you do..? which yields better performance increases.? I know most manufacturers detune their card quite a bit but given the high Km (long running km's) I am concerned that mucking about with the engine mapping could blow it up etc.

    does anyone wind up the turbo boost..viable..?

    315,000 km on the clock.

    Opinion welcome, data backed analysis even better if anyone knows of any.

    Which diesel engine? 1KZ or 1KD?

      2005 model, I think it is KZ off top of my head.. not near car at the moment. they changed to the D4D etc I think the year after mine - like 2006 etc.

        just read all those.. great reply there amts - that for collating that list, much appreciated.

        think I will go the exhaust first.. then chip down the track a little.

          Hope that the threads are helpful. I got the impression that the chip has the most effect but I own a V6 so don't pay too much attention to the 1KZ details.

            Not a mechanic but definitely exhaust first. The OE dump pipe is very restrictive. You have to get those extra hot gases out if you slightly uptune the engine esp with chip. An EGT gauge probe in the exhaust would help to avoid any nasty engine damage. Putting on a chip first, well you would possibly crack the head.

            I was happy with just a 2.75" exhaust but found a good second hand chip a lot later and thought 'hey why not'. It was running really really rich, got it put on a Dyno and the mechanic slapped on a manual boost controller to lean off fuelling (runs at 12psi). Now runs at max 81.4Kw (@60KPH). Just makes the 1KZ run better. Still not a D$D but I'm happy. No more for me as I would like her to go for a long long time...Has cost a fair bit of coin though.

              I have the 3inch exhaust with no chip,and you hardly notice any difference in power at high speed.More low down grunt.For High speed I feel that the chip is the way to go.Doing both will give the best results.
