  • Engine Rattle and no its not the death nock

    Hey Guys

Ok so im stuck. Im a Diesel Mechanic by trade but this one has me stuck.

So my 2008 1KD-FTV has developed a rattle when driving, its comes in at about 1500-2000 rpm. Doesn't matter if cold or hot it is always present. My car has done 190,000km and i replaced the injectors 100kms ago as all signs led to this but it has made no difference to the rattle im hearing.

I am running Penrite 5W-40 and i am thinking of running a heavier oil to see if this is related at all. The vehicle is serviced every 5000km and i have recently changed the filter at fuel tanks

I may be being paranoid here and i see this a lot at work where drivers think there is something wrong when there isnt. so i thought maybe a fresh look at it may help me.
    • New Injectors
    • New suction control valve
    • Cleaned little filter for turbo boost control

    Any help will be appreciated

And you have had a look up the sump at the oil pump pickup screen to ensure it's not blocked?

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Oil starvation leading to top end rattle/noise... then BANG!!!

I thought about that but my injector seals were fine so there isnt really any reason for the pickup to be blocked

I know this one is far out but I had a rattle like that at 1200-1400 rpm and it turned out that the new serpentine belt I put on had a little lump on it which would 'flick' the tensioner pulley causing the noise.

Can I have a set of your seals?

I doubt any of them at the moment.

One thing I have found...never ASSume anything. Checking your oil pick up for any accumulation of crud costs you nothing at your next oil change.

                Hi Jester,

My 2007 1KD has been doing this for quite some time now; Injectors, suction control valve and pick up screen are all good, I have noticed it is always at vacuum or low boost (under 1-2 PSI). It was suggested to me, some of these engines just start making noise as they age, I dont understand how this could be or possibly an EGR fault, just try blank or restrict - still no change with 7mm restrict plate.

                Cheers Batto

We have a 2007 also, 210,000 km similar rattle. Have not done the work you have done yet. Will eventually do the injectors (readings out on one) , weighing up the cost and worried about that that noise won't change. Tend to notice noises when pointed out, and when going from quiet petrol to an oil burner. Paranoa?
I am looking at wherever resonance that can occur; front number plate, exhaust shields, panels etc. - all when pressed against appear to quieten. Is this perception? Turning your ears has also an affect on what is heard, suggesting a high frequency component of the sound.

                  But clearly moments/temperature related.

Not the death rattle from faulty injectors? - dunno. Not all Prado's go this way. I'm cautious though; there's a thread here where injectors in spec were changed, retested found OK but remained noisy then replaced with Delco became quiet- no explanation.

I think we need help with a sound meter.

Have had a rattle sound on our 2007/01 for as long as i can remember. Originally thought injectors as they were getting on even though ALL still way within spec at 180,000k i decided to change them out anyway.

Nope new ones put in at 180,000 and same. No seats had leaked when they were changed out either. Oil pickup always spotless and checked every 5,000k with oil change. New SCV as it was getting a little more thirsty and at 230,000k i thought it was about time. Little better fuel economy but rattle (clang) still there at about 1,800 - 2,000 rpm.
Has now got 235,000k on it, still does it and always has. Never worked out what it is. Figured if it hasn't blown up at 253,000k then i guess it won't.

Other than the noticeable (in cabin) clang at that rpm it's smooth and powerful at all levels of rpm. The noise only bothers me around town when there is not as much noise in the cabin and you can here it at those ranges. On the highway you can still tell it's there from about 1,800-2,100 rpm but not as noticable with all the highway noise.

Now if you want a clangy noisy engine then try driving a triton around, ours sounds like it's going to explode but have gotten used to it.

If you figure it out let me know.

I know with mine, all valve clearances are good and have cleaned intake manifold, although have not yet run liquimoly intake decarb through it to clean the intake ports on the block. I have on several occasions spoken to the guys at Bailey's Diesel, and even they cant tell me without having the car. "Im a qualified diesel mechanic and this has me stumped.......Embarrassing or what hahaha - Jester" hahaha, I know how you feel, although only a light vehicle mechanic I have no idea what's going on either. Hopefully someone can work this out, it has to be something.
