    Gday Guys,
    Ive just added some gauges to my 120 with the 1kzte engine, temp,EGT & boost, all up and working which is nice however Im not sure what temp is normal for the EGT to be reading. What would be the norm? also around what temp is the danger zone?

    There is no global "normal" or "safe" temp for EGT, it depends on your probe position (pre or post turbo?)
    Give us your results and we can offer an opinion.

      gday mate cheers for the reply
      my probe is post turbo and running normal (60kph) the egt is running between 250 and 350deg, while on flat open road doing around 85-90kph it was sitting around the 450deg and while running up a fairly decent hill doing 80kph it was up around the 500deg.
      all of this is without towing or a full car.
      any advice is appreciated

        Mine cruises around 350/370 on highway, flat terrain. She'll climb to 450ish going up hills, but this can go up to 550/570 up really steep hills whilst towing the CT. I had my EGT alarm set at 560 and it occasionally goes off on those very steep climbs at speed. You can easily drop the temp by slowing down or manually shifting down earlier and cruising with a trailer in 4th will result in lower temps as opposed to 5th/overdrive. Obviously the higher the temp the greater the risk. Anything approaching 600 for extended periods could create dramas. There is a fatal temp but the actual value escapes me at present. Aluminum melts at 660 so piston damage can occur in these high temperatures.

          BB, once again, speaks wisely. The takeaway points to highlight from his post are:
          1) DON'T tow in overdrive, the dual reasons being lower EGTs and not destroying your gearbag.
          2) Given the "rule of thumb" about EGT temp drop across the turbo (100-120C) you should avoid temps above 600C post turbo.
          My EGT alarm is at 720 preturbo. I have never been able to find the "fatal temp" for the 1KZ, but consensus webwide seems to be not above 700C TIT for "extended periods" (not quantified). It is everyone's best guess unless someone wants to flog a 1KZ to destruction and report back.
