08 120 with 160000km - started holiday and about 500 clicks in the main seal went in the turbo. Just had injectors replaced at 158000km in conjunction with 160000 km service by Toyota 2 months ago. Would there be anyway to tell or test to ascertain if/when a turbo would fail and if so what would that be?

That's no good. From reading on this forum it's not a very common failure.Dave

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.

Thanks for the info. Have to get it fixed as holiday needs to continue so no time to chase something cheaper. Should get it back this arvo. Apparently it was the seal that keeps the oil out that failed, whereas the air side is the most common failure. Toyota tech reckons they have never seen them fail like this before. Always a first I suppose!! Been a costly few months. Does anybody know what are the signs to look for or hear that would indicate this was going to happen? There was just a massive cloud of smoke as the oil was getting dumped straight into the exhaust, no noise or indication that it was going to let go. Thanks

Every stealership of every make would have one hanging over their service counter; in fact, I'm surprised it is not a standard Toyota part number already. :-)
