  • CAV Filter Fitment

    Hi All,

Has anyone done a self install of a CAV filter? IF so could you supply the part number of the CAV filter and what parts are needed to do the job?

I would like to get one put on but it seems that the wait time to get anything done here in Alice is in the weeks timeframe.

would this kit do the trick?

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/CAV-Diesel-Fuel- ... dZViewItem

    or this one?

    Cheers

    Hi Mav,
I would use this one http://cgi.ebay.com.au/CAV-Diesel-Fuel- ... dZViewItem
The D4D fuel filter inlet hose is 18mmOD 10mmID, I would mount it next to the existing fuel filter, but you would need to make up a decent aluminium bracket to utilise the existing holes in the inner guard or the two studs protruding from the firewall.
I have not tried this filter in this position so can't advise further.

Be very care-full when removing the existing fuel filter hose that you do not allow any contaminants into the fuel hose or filter inlet, do not carry out this operation outdoors near any dusty conditions.

Read the manual regarding replacing the fuel filter and disconnecting the fuel hose or filter assy.

    Hope this helps a little.

      CAV Filter Fitmen

I have just purchased one of these kits with the 10mm hose from this guy. Delivery was quick and I am sure it will do the job OK when I get a chance to fit it. Need to make up some brackets. Also bought some spare filters at the same time - $6.50 each.

Thanks Clifton, it helped heaps. I am in the process of obtaining a CAV supplemental filter at the moment.

            Hi Mav,
Was a bit busy yesterday forgot to warn you, when you fit your new filter leave yourself adequate fuel hose lengths to remove the original fuel filter housing as it is easier to change the cartridge by unbolting the filter housing, the same may be said for your new CAV filter, also watch the bend radius in your hoses ensure you have nice smooth bends no kinks and keep all hoses clear of the body to prevent chaffing.

Sorry for the lecture but it is important

Well I had some feedback from a vendor of CAV filters and this is what he had to say on the use of them in a CRD engine:

"CRD engine will not benefit from CAV filter, and will put additional load on fuel pump by pulling thru 2 filters and thus cause supply pump failure - premature injection pump failure in electronic engines is more often caused by wear in the piston advance housing, which oscillates many more times than foot on the pedal that it is trying to duplicate electronically - because it is steel piston on alloy housing it wears and introduces particles after the fuel filter - thats one view, but it is one reason that filters are blamed for an electronic engine problem - if however your problems are humidity related the addition of a water seperator filter and additional electric fuel pump may be worthwhile - am working on a smaller add-on seperator kit at the moment which maybe suitable - mainly because the filtering media removes the water, rather than using mechanical method."

So I guess its a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Thanks for the info mav :!:

As I have not received my new Playdo as yet......the Prado does not have a water seperator now? If not I don't see how a water seperator would hurt anything.....nice to be able to drain every now and then. Maybe they don't place on because of environmental issues? That is if there is not one on the Prado D4D

                regards,
                Paul

                  Hi lostdingo2,
The D4D does have a water separating secondary filter, the top section of the spin- on housing has the filter enclosed, the lower half is the sediment and water gallery, it does have a water/ sediment alarm and a drain cock.

                      Hi Gurus,

Is there any advantage in draining some fluid out of the fuel filter on a regular basis, say every 2,000 kilometres, to order to keep the sediment bowl as clean as possible?

                      Regards
                      Glenn

                        Hi sacred cow,
I used to drain off 1/4 cup in my Pootrol and other trucks every 5000kms and change my fuel filter at 10,000kms intervals, however if I was in the bush and used 44gal drums for fuel, I would drain a bit off more often.
I always drained off the fuel using a small hose and glass jar to collect the fuel so I could eyeball what sediment was present.

I had some feedback from the guys at Berrima Diesel and they confirm Mav's advice from the CAV vendor. Additional filters are NOT recommended, just replace the factory filter element every 5 or 10k. So I have put on hold my intention to fit a supplementary filter. Based on info in the other thread I am off to count the number of leads going to my injectors. Wonder when the change was? Seems that Aug 07 saw some rationalisations like standard wiring looms etc so maybe then, anyone know for sure?

Hiya - I dont have my service CD on me (hopefully it may shed some light tho..) - but maybe one of the aftermarket chip manufacturer's (like maybe DPChip, Tunit etc) - that plug into the common-rail will know. I know when i have rung up - they ask, "so what is the build date" - so i guess they know. I have also pulled mine off (geepers she's a hard little bi*ch to remove) so be careful if you try it and hold the plug - not the wires!!!

                            cheers
