What has this got to do with a diesel engine, who cares what the fuel ecomomy of a petrol engine is!

Craig ..... not trying to be a smart a$$ here, but IF you look at the original post he asked for "fuel consuption figures for your petrol auto 120's?"

Now just because he's a newbie and posted his question in the wrong section doesn't mean than everone should ignore him.

No I am not a member of the outer limits 4x4 forum.
Yes it was a mistake but better to say somthing so he realizes he has made the mistake.
The thing that I like about this user group is it is more subject based, people don't go off on a tangent away from the main subject like I have seen it the past on other sites

My Petrol 120 towing a WRX Rally car on a pretty solid car trailer and the car loaded with 2 spare rims & rally tyres (Heavy) Tools, Jack, Tent, Thick Ground tarp etc and 3 solid guys is returning regular 14.5 ltr per 100kms.

2 tanks and I've averaged 15l/100. 1st one had a bit of hwy cruising, 2nd all city driving.

Just filled mine, the wife has been driving for a couple weeks. (She is a very calm driver!)

                  1354 Kms, 180 Ltrs = 13.294 Litres Per 100.

That fuel consumption makes me very jealous.... But seeing this is in the diesel section about fuel guzzling and i haven't posted on this site yet, I'll put one in..

I have had my Grande TD since July 03 and in fact have just put a 3 year dealer warranty extension on it, because finances don't really allow a change at this point for me..

As far as the 1KZ goes ...It does go very well... downhill... But in reality its pretty much a slug compared to the Petrol V6.

My fuel consumption over the 3 years of ownership has basically been:

With Original 265/65 tyres - Around 11-11.5 l/100k's doing highway touring
Around 14-15l/100k around the city doing short trips.

With 265/70 tyres (BFG AT's) Add 1l/100km to the above figures.

Of course, climate control is usually going and on highway touring we are loaded to the gunnalls with 2 kids, 2 adults and all the stuff you could put in a camry boot plus all the stuff you couldn't fit into a camry boot...

                      Thats funny.

I have heard the stories about larger dia tyres adding to fuel consumption.
Is it fact? or is it that the added rolling dia gives false figures to the fuel consumption sum?
You would fill the tanks when empty, check litres against kms and think there was a worse fuel consumption in place. just because the odometer read less. but with larger diameter tyers you travel a little further than the odometer reads...
So you could have travelled the same distance as before.
Does that make sence to you guys or am I just waffling rubbish?
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

The figures include the 3.4% for xtra mileage due to the 265/70/17 tyres.

Basically it just chews more juice, but the tyres seem so much better than the originals in every situation... including on road.....

I also see some very knowledgeable people (i.e darren, who I would believe in preference to most) believe the BFG's I have are not as good as they used to be and may not be that great for punctures... The unfortunate thing is that I haven't tested that out... Our Meerenie loop trip got cancelled because our friends (GXL diesel owners) decided they would go to France and Italy instead...

Mind you, the BFG's handle the speed humps in Burnside Village beautifully... Just wish like blazes I could bemoan their ability to handle punctures by getting them on the dirt more!!!

BTW the camry V6 was a great unit, just got bogged a hell of a lot more than the Prado.. And the boot was too small...for our ability to take more than needed anywhere..

Anybody put the DPChip in?? I see they are offering 30 day money back guarantee..... I need more power.. for the next 2 years 10 months... Until I can replace with something more powerful....

                        PK.

Petrol again (why is this still in the diesel section!? ).. I think that mod needs help!

Just done a HWY trip ADL to Port Augusta, Cruise control set to 115 most of the way, a few side trips, and some Beach/Sand Dune/Mud for about 40 kms on way back.2 big guys, about 75 kilo of stuff in the back too.
Headwind on way out, tailwind + heavy sidedwinds on way back.

                          750 kms : 90 litres = 12.16 litres per 100kms.

And a mate just got back to me with his new Diesel (D4D) hilux.
Loaded up in the ute bit and back seat with car spares and wheel/fuel. Full size car trailer and a WRX rally car on the trailer.
465k for 50 litres towing the car trailer = 10.75ltr/100

Not bad, I reckon the new engine in the PRADO should be great.
Another mate with the Turbo diesel prado towin same car on a trailer couldnt even keep up!

I'm glad you posted in the diesel section... It just makes me even more determined to do something.... Better go see the accountant again. Another mate is ordering a new prado with D4D and reckons mid november.

As a fellow ADL resident I have done the ADL - Port Augusta drive many times, especially when my wifes Brother lives there.

On my last two trips, my mileage was no better than yours... thats right.. my exquisitely performing diesel got just over 12l /100km... Towing nothing, but loaded up with the family and luggage, but no roof rack or bull bar or anything like that. (265/70/17 tyres though) And I have to plan my overtaking moves carefully.

Mind you, the engine power and the fuel consumption are the only complaints I have about the vehicle. Its done all the 4 wheeling I've needed it to and been quite driveable around town. Grande bits and pieces keep everyone entertained and reverse camera I installed gets everyone off my back about reversing a truck.

I'm interested to know where you did sand driving on the way back from pt augusta. Thought it was all pretty well closed off up there and down the Yorke peninsula to wallaroo. (maybe need to start another thread on that one though...)

                              Paterson point.

And even though I was impressed by the D4D in the Hilux, I still personally would buy another Petrol prado before going Diesel.
